Flounder fishing help!
Hi im looking for some tips on fishing flounder on the norht west coast, mayo, sligo, donegal.
I have fished a few supposedly good spots along sligo coast according to fisheries boards however i have had no luck to date.
ive been using various flounder rigs with mackeral strips but all i am catching is those pesky crabs, its like fishing in a whore house.
Any advise would be greatley appreciated. im generally a fly fisher who looks for alternative fishing for the off season, thanks in advance.

Re: Flounder fishing help!
i find those flounder rigs that you buy in the shops use the wrong hook size, make your own with yellow and white beads and luminious beads as well for night time fishing, and size 2-4 hooks anything bigger will reduce the fish you catch.use two rods keep one right in the surf line, and one a bit farther out,and give the baits a twitch every few minutes.a beach with a stream or river flowing in helps fish close to this.hope this helps.

yeah, but mackerel can be fish well on those beaches at times too. keel strand on achill, mullghmore, streedagh are all up around your way and fish well for small turbot and flounder. i fished keel strand when i was a kid on family holiday with my dad. basically a novice back then we slaughtered flats every cast. try not to use large coloured beads on rigs, i find they kill the natural movement on the bait and put off more fish than they attract. a three hook flapper constructed with 18'' snoods made from clear 15lb line will do the trick. size 4 aberdeans will do the job on the business end. try a plain lead in the surf too. flounder on those beaches are often in very close, i mean 10 yards, sometimes closer, start from the back of the furthest breaking wave and work your way in. to present mack correctly for flats coulnt be simpler, slice a small sliver around 3-4cm long, and 1 cm wide, hook it once through the top, so its resembles a small bait and flutters around in the surf.

Have to agree with what you say eric, except so far from my limited personal fishing the sligo coast beach marks, I havent caught any Turbot up here Yet !! and also why is it all flattie rigs are a beaded affair (mine have 8mm Beads), there must be something in it and I have caught my few on beaded rigs with blade attractors on Sandeel and/or Lug, but I do know some lads do tip Lug with mack strips ?

ah its a matter of time, the beaches up there are stuffed full of little t leaf turbos.
i have fished with and without beads and from all my experience, a natural bait wins hands down. if you ever go to a top competion featuring top match anglers, 95% of these lads will not use beads on flatty rigs. flatty rigs you buy in shops have beads on them because they look more attractive to the customer, shiny bright colours are devistating for catching anglers.
heres a link viewtopic.php?f=1&t=21505&hilit=flounder containing my thoughts on flattys. read away

Re: Flounder fishing help!
Hi there,
as im not familar to the beaches in question,i cant comment on specific baits etc,but a tactic thats working a treat for me all year since been hammered by a match angler[hi Hugh
],rolling ball leads+flouro 10 to 20 yds no more rough or calm on open surf beaches its been a real eye opener and the number of other species in that zone is unreal.Long or short traces it 'nt made a blind bit of differance, short shank aberdeens size3 to 1 max the weapon of choice.

Re: Flounder fishing help!
Just read that original Flounder post again from Eric's link and it's amazing I have to say, fairplay Eric and Pete, 2 guys who know what they are talking about!!!
I suggest you read it and then read it again! I might print it and tape inside the tackle box!
That to me is now gospel.
Amen.
