fish ID please.

#1 Post by red »

i caught this "monster" last night on rag and a size 2 hook, put up a massive fight   . apart from it i blanked so it was better than nothing. first i thought it was a whiting, then the word weaver came to mind and i put on the gloves. he went back anyway whatever it was.
it had a slightly golden colour in it which didnt really show in the pics. the top jaw looks very big compared to the bottom one,
its probably obvious what it was but i dont think ive seen it before, maybe its the size that threw me
any ideas??

the more i look at it the more i think your right, the colours in it threw me off a little but they didnt show in the pics. i hope its not a sign of things to come, i was hoping they'd keep away for another while yet.

the lads are right, deffo a whiting. easiest way to tell them apart from juvenile pollack is the lower jaw. on the whiting it's shorter than the upper jaw. where as the pollack's lower jaw protrudes the upper jaw  the weevers tend to have a very stumpy head that looks outta place to the long body. hopes this helps man.

Difficult to tell but we get wee coalies that colour on the open beaches up here in the north of SCotland.

Just a wee note that the weaver are starting to really show up in the north and they can look almost identical at night.
Looks like a wee whiting to me btw!
