BALLYMONEY DOG NEEDED EMERGENCY VETERINARY TREATMENT

A DOG had to be given emergency veterinary treatment after she swallowed some fishing tackle which was discarded on a North Wexford beach.

Ann McGlynn and Rebecca Coen were out walking their dogs on Ballymoney South beach on Thursday morning when they noticed a large piece of fishing tackle with seven hooks on it, and they picked it up, and bagged it, to dispose of it later.
'Unfortunately we missed several other pieces,' said Rebecca. 'On our second lap of the beach, Mollie (Ann's oldest dog) was digging and found a piece of tackle and weights and caught some fish hooks in her mouth.'

They managed to free the hooks from Mollie's mouth, but she was badly cut. As they were working to free the hooks, Rebecca's eleven month old pup Bree found another piece and swallowed it.

Dogs swallowed fishing hooks discarded on beach

TWO DOGS had a lucky escape from serious injury on Ballymoney Beach last Thursday morning.

The dogs discovered abandoned fishing tackle on the south beach in Ballymoney and swallowed the tackle getting the hooks caught in their mouths.

One of the dogs, Bree, had to be rushed to the vets and sedated before the hook was cut out of her throat.

With this in mind, I went down to Joe and Mick’s shop in Courtown to see if they knew who was ran the competition. I had hoped to lodge a complaint to the organisers.

I had a chat with Joe and he advised that there had been no competition the previous weekend.

I explained what had happened and he was surprised and disgusted. He advised that if it were a competition, the rules prohibit that kind of disregard of the beaches.”

Ann was on the beach on Saturday and found more discarded fishing paraphernalia.

“To us it shows a complete disregard for those who use the beaches. Luckily it was us who found the tackle, and although our dogs were hurt, they were lucky too.

People walk barefoot on the beach all the time, children too, and it would have been all too easy for a child to trample on the hooks,” Rebecca added.

I have removed several rigs from beaches in south wicklow and north wexford recently that had been left carelessly on the beach by anglers. These were new rigs, not washed up lost rigs.

I hope those fine upstanding dog walkers are picking up their dogs s*** too like they are supposed to or is it a case of pot & kettle or two wrongs ?

while i whole heartedly agree rigs should be taken home, its is an easy mistake to make, one i have often done myself.

I've seen dogs pi$$ on beach buddies, i saw one owner let her dog take a dump an elephant would be proud of 6 feet from my mates box and when he confronted her she just walked on...
Should dogs not be on leads anyway especially in public places...I feel bad for the poor dogs but I think dog owners should take a look at themselves before they start throwing stones....

Mistakes are made and in fairness I would be surprised if lads were leaving traces on the beaches on purpose..I guess we should be more careful but I think the dog walkers are just as bad or guilty of being "careless"!!

By the sound's of it there was a lot of gear left on the beach no excuse for that

there is no angler any where going to purposely leave rigs that they have spent money on behind the fact the dog dug up the rig with weigh attached tells me it was washed in sping tides wash lost gears in all the time

As an angler, hunter and dog owner, I feel like there is bad people everywhere... But fishing tackle, cartridges shells and other stuff before being dangerous are a big source of pollution and take, for some parts, hundred years to disapear ...

Discarded hooks and lines can be dangerous for dogs, other wildlife (especially birds) and most concerning children ... As well as all the rusty beer cans and broken glass ...

I think it's now a rule in our society to show no respect for other people and our environement ... Everybody is throwing stuff everywhere like cigarettes butts, bottles, cans, papers, bags, fishing tackle packages, bait packages, and some more, by walkers, bathers, anglers, hunters, people who make some bbq on the beach, people who find difficult to go to the recycling center ...

But there is not just bad anglers and bad dog owners ... First of all everybody has to take his own reponsibilities ...

I regularly, on seafishing or lough fishing, pick up loads of garbage ...

I am also surprised to have not seen so much advertising on the website for beach or pier cleaning campaign to show that we, anglers, are a majority of people who are concerned about our environment and other users ...

Regarding what seems to be a kind of "war" between some anglers and some dog owners, in total fairness, nobody as never being hurt by a dog or horse poop (except in their proud) ...

im sorry but i will have to disagree with you i brought my son and nephew to greystones during the summer also my sons yorkshire terrier which was on a lead at all times a large black dog that was chasing stones for everyone on the beach came over and when my nephew picked up our dog this black yoke took a good lump out of the back of his leg it took off before i could bend my jigger over its head afternoon spent in temple st hospital also how many times have you been on a beach and seen horses bolt towards the sea i witnessed this hundreds of times and finally its not anglers dirtying our harbours ok some leave bait wrappings but bottles and cans are normally left by the gangs of teenagers drinking on the beach[killiney at the shed] or at the harbour[ howth] this will stop with the approach of winter and any mention of a clean up the council/harbour attority will love that and let 2 more workers go they have already stopped all overtime thats why these places are full of litter at weekends last bank holiday monday in howth with a carnavel on the harbour there was bins overflowing all over the place but no one there to empty them i know this is not nice reading but anglers get the dirty end of the stick all the time by the media. talking to george in the life boat office today the got a call that a jet ski was sighted about 2 miles out when the got there it was a fridge/freezer that had been taped up and still full of rotten food
some one instead of bringing it to the dump had tried to bury it at sea this is a huge danger to craft imagine hitting this at 20kts mind boggles lifeboat been launched to investigate this so i dont think il be doing any mass clean ups soon

I am sorry for your dog, but we were not talking about dogs attack, but about litter problems ... I am everyday on the Northside beaches were dogs, horses and people are cohabiting peacefully most of the time ...

I am disgusted about bad behaviour and litter pollution from some "anglers". And I am shocked that some anglers refuse to see that "anglers litters" in some places are a real problem ...

What I was saying is litter problems is the concern of everybody ... A simple example, how many smokers on the beach (anlgers or not) put their cigarettes butts in a little box or in their pockets and throw them in a bin after ?

I have cleaned some places around Killiney, Malahide, Howth, Dun Laoghaire, Muckno, Inny river ect... while fishing, and I guarantee you that dog faeces were maybe 0.5% of all the litter. And I am really sorry to tell that but fishing tackle (not washed, but maybe "lost") mostly line (hundreds of meter of fishing lines), beer cans (on places were I have just seen day or night just "anglers"), sandwich packages, and others bait and tackle package represents for some places 80% of all the litter collected in a bin bag in few minutes ... I hate fishing in litter so I have a tendance to clean around me before setting up , this has never put somebody out of work ...

After I agree with you with the gangs drinking at night in some places, irresponsible dog owners ect..., but we anglers have a responsibility as nature users ...

We have to realize that sometimes our gear can harm and kill (especially birds) ... At the moment some it's a dog, but when it will be a child ? Effects can be terrible with maybe more tentative to prohibit fishing from beaches ...

How many are taking the litter you find around you when fishing? How many have seen a good lenght of line on the beach and leave it ?? It cost nothing, just a little bin bag and show to the people that not all the anglers don't care, because with a story like that all the anglers will be pointed out ...

Clean up our doorstep before looking at the neighbour's one.

People need to be responsible when using amenities that others may use/freqeunt be they anglers or dog owners or whoever.
I am sure rigs were not left on the beach on purpose but a little extra care could stop the negative press about anglers.

everyone has left rigs behind by mistake but some of us pick up line left by others if i find line i cut it in to tiny pieces and put it the bin so even if it does blow away the pieces of line are to small to do any damage . its not nice that peoples dogs got hurt but ive often been out and some ones dog has made a dash for the rig on the tripod while the owner looks at me as if i have 2 heads when i shout at the dog ,.

I went down to whitebay last year and some yobs had a party and a "smash the beer bottle off the rocks" competition.... broken glass everywhere in and under the sand.....fire still lighting .....and rubbish everywhere......

Remember...there are certain people who wish to have our sport banished...
Would you see reports of this behavior on the media?
As for dogs....i like them and grew up with dogs in the house ...but the problem of dog crap everywhere seem to show no end....

dogs leave a bigger danger on the beach!.. their own excrement.....i know someone that have lost their sight from it, honestly.....come on lads how many shits have you nearly or did stand on. i know leaving tackle on a beach is careless but so is huge dog shits!!!
