Eating mullet.

I remember a good few years back, seeing a well known female irish tv cook, comment, that Thin Lip Mullet were better eating than Bass.
I have had Mullet and chips in Auz...very nice.
So....question is ...have you eaten Mullet (sea going) and how would you rate it........
Could we save the bass numbers....
I remember tales of bags of mullet going up to the fish and chip shops in cork years ago...
In Norway they prize the big coalies over cod (so the T.V. tells me!)
Is there a "fashion" thing attached to the type of fish we eat.

Also would people comment on the different types of fish (our waters) they have eaten....
I mean unusual ones......
Guinard....etc......

Gurnard is actually very tasty! As is doggie, once cooked right.. Conger is best left marinaded overnight to try loosen it up as it purely muscle....
Mullet- may as well wrap some fish flesh around a t**d, as that all ya gonna be eating :lol:

have eat mullet and they are beautiful,but the ones we eat are free ranging ones,not ones caught in habours that are eating all sort off crap!! literally!!!have eaten gurnard,lovely,ling,sweet meat,tasty,silver eel,flounder,both very nice,had pouting in a chower,thornback ray,not gone on it!and all the usual after that,pollock,bland,coalies,tasty, mack off course,

Grey mullet is a beautiful fish to eat once it is caught in clean water. I catch the odd one for the pot around valentia island and they really are superb. My wife ate one once as a 'bass' and told her afterwards what it was and she is a convert and i would kill one to eat before a bass for conservation and flavour. All the top seafood chefs rate the grey mullet rick stein hugh fer..........ll Gurnard is fantastic eating red mullet is beautiful flounder delicious and it makes a lot of sense to eat the fish that is sustainable. Coal fish are good too must get round to trying a dogfish as there are plenty around.

couldnt touch mullet after seeing them eat err....maltesers :mrgreen:

, brill and turbot very tastey but pricey, black sole NICE but again pricey. next experiment is goujons of dogfish in honey and garlic

red gurnard are -really- nice, have had conger - small ones are OK wife and kids love it - tastes like it already has vinegar on it, my granda used to love the big ones - had them as a kid but wasnt keen

tried rockling once - ( belly hooked and bleedin bad) - dont do it - cat wouldnt even eat it :shock:

, flounder really good, doggie wasnt impressed,

only ever had farmed bass - not impressed,

freshwater/silver eels - awesome doesnt get any better

, seatrout - small enough to fry whole - fantastic,
pollack - bland and mingin at the same tiime - coalie not much better,
had wrasse before - ok, nothing special,
blue shark - meaty , pretty good

meant to add - remember reading that one of the main reasons that grey mullet werent exploited commercially wss that they did not travel well, and the quality deteriorated rapidly compared to other species.

thing is, the only reson why there are so many big shoals of good sized mullet is because then aren't killed - wouldnt take long for them to be wiped out.

What we do with them is turn the fillets skin side up and cover them with a good layer of salt for an hour or so. This sucks out the unwanted skin juices and firms up the flesh a bit. The salt is then washed off and the fillets dredged in flour before frying. Delicious - i prefer them to cod. Quite a few fish benefit from this treatment.

How about bullhuss curry,very meaty fish but needs some flavour enhancing.ling is tops ,i havent seen it for sale much.i often eat the octopuss we catch in a sea food spagetti.would love to try mullet the brother is going after them next week i might put a order in

i would like to try the gunard... i saw it on a tv show and they said it was great...
I like the salt idea ... we have salted ling in the fish market in cork....
Its interesting...
I tried "brining" chicken on the bone a few times ..really good.
Take one full cup salt and one full cup sugar..add to a good size bowl and put your chicken or pork in and cover with water (wont work with red meat) overnight then BBQ.

anyone try this with fish? Might be worth a go ...never thought of trying it with fish!!

have seen mullet stuffed with a herb butter and baked in tin foil in the oven it tasted very nice

personaly i wouldn`t touch a mullet.... a fanastic fish but very unclean in their eating habits,have watched them eating human turds and human fat :shock:

maybe the sea going mullet would be better,they def look cleaner than the harbour and estuary mullet...
another reason is apparently a 5lb mullet is 15-20 years old so i wouldn`t have the heart to kill it...
thats about 1/3 of their maximum size so does that mean a fully grown fish would be 45-60 years old

(and people think bass are slow growing)

im not a regular fish eater but i`ve tried a few in my day....
marks out of 10

mack- didn`t like it. 1-10
cod- bland.3-10
whiting-not bad.5-10
haddock- very tasty.7-10
plaice- used to love it but not that fussed now.5-10
ray wings(thornback)- very tasty.7-10
anglerfish- yum yum.8-10
wolf fish- yum yum.8-10
pollack- top fish.9-10
coalie- bland.3-10
farmed bass- just ok.5-10(would like to try real bass)

i`ve tried a few raw fish in a Japanese place Edinburgh last year such as tuna,eel and someting else but cant remember what it was.
to my surprise i really liked japanese

tryed the mullet, was the first and last time, didn't like it at all.
top of my list for eating would be.

monkfish
Bass
seatrout
haddock
plaice
red gurnard

i think the uglier the fish the better it tastes :lol:

not sure if the wolf fish tasted like angler,its been a while since i had either but from memory they were both strong tasting

got word from another list member that he had seen 2 guys with 14 dead mullet at mullaghmore :cry:

- they had seen how i was getting them on mack after groundbaiting - :oops:

what a nightmare - had seen the guys eyes light up when they saw the mullet - (they had been catching mini pollack.)

at that rate the place would be barren in no time :twisted:
