dont know it,but look at the base of the rod, just above the reel seat you will see the length of the rod,eg 10ft,11ft,or longer, also you will see what weight it is designed for, normally in grams eg 80-150gm,that would say the rod is designed to cast weights from 3-5oz,let us know what length it is,and what weight it is rated for, also is it a telescopic or a two peice rod?

If you can, bring it back, argos are decent about that sort of thing, it will break on you. Down south you could go into any fishing shop (not baumanns stillorgan) and get a good sea combo for under €50. See below.

Your powerful £30 sterling will get you further in a proper fishing shop

totally agree with cormdogg, get a refund and head into a tackle shop, most tackle shops do a special deal on a beginners combo, usually a 12' rod + large f/s reel and line, the ones i have seen in the shops are going for £25 to £35. and are perfect for someone just starting off, the only thing is the line on them is nearly always 25lb b/s. and is not up to much, just strip it off and fill it with 15lb...
as ole rab c said " see me' see the sea' i love the sea me"
right i'am off for a swally!!!!!!! so were's the F***'n purse!!!!!!!
