WRASSE & POLLACK CO. SLIGO

#1 Post by FisherKing »

People: Myself and the Girlfriend

Duration: 8 Hrs

Tide: Low Tide

Weather: Day 1: Windy and Rough , Day 2: Slight Breeze, Calm

Bait: Lugworm & Spinner

Rigs: Single Hook with Weight

Results: Day 1: 1 Corkwing Wrasse, 6 Ballan Wrasse - Day 2: 4 Ballan Wrasse, 3 Pollack, 2 Mackerel

Report: Wed 12th & Thurs 13th August

Day 1

As the weather wasn’t too bad, we decided to head to the local beach to dig some Lug, & then set off to the first rock mark which is usually very good for Wrasse & Pollack with easy access to deep water at low tide.

When we arrived there was a fairly strong North Westerly wind so set up in the most sheltered area we could find, so on with the Lug, dropped down alongside the rock into a deep gully.

A few bites later hooked a small Corkwing Wrasse followed by alot of small Ballan. After being plagued by small Wrasse for an hour changed to a bigger hook. Then got some strong bites hooked a very good Ballan which is my biggest of the year weighing in at 4 lb :D. It gave a great scrap. For the first day very happy - good few fish landed.

Day 2

We returned to the same destination, there was only a slight breeze ideal spinning conditions so on with the lure & on the second cast hooked a great Pollack about 20 feet out from the rock edge, it fought very hard all the way in but just as I was about to land him the hook came out. I estimate him to be about 9 – 10 lb. The best battle I’ve ever had with a Pollack. Was raging to see him swim off after, but you win some & lose some :x :!:

Spent another 20 minutes spinning, nothing so went after Wrasse again got a few around the 2 lb mark but no big ones about. When late evening came we packed up & headed to another rock mark about a quarter of a mile away.

After a bit of a hike started spinning, got two Mackerel, one medium, one large, it then went quiet for a while until it started getting dark, then the Pollack were on the feed mostly small but managed to catch one weighing 3lb. All in all very good fishing 8).
