Tigger II, Cork Harbour, 09/08/2009 - a 7 year old drubbing

#1 Post by thescotsman »

People: me and the family

Duration: 11.30 - 15:30

Tide: LW 14:30 or there abouts

Weather: southerly breeze, cloudy

Bait: mackerel

Rigs: 3 hook flowing traces, animal rigs

Results: me - lesser weever, mack, pollack
Kyle - pollack, thornback, conger, lesser weever, grey gurnard, dogfish

Report: Family trip out, with my son Kyle wanting to catch a fish which was flat (to him ray or flatfish), a conger and a bull huss. So a bit of big bait fishing in order.
Bit of wind against tide in the harbour so we headed outside to find some macks. Of course we couldn't find any for ages until I finally caught one, we fished on a bit longer but couldn't get any more. Kyle managed a pollack in the meantime.
Enough was enough, so headed out to conger mark with our surfeit of bait and decided to hope for the best and a few macks while we were there.
Eating lunch when Kyle's rod started nodding, he started reeling in but told me it was stuck. I tried it and it moved, so I gave it back to him, thinking he had a doggie or a conger. Great to watch his excitement and the effort he had to put in to lift and reel the fish in. As I was looking down into the water I saw a large white shape, at which point I realised he was into a ray. A thornback as it turned out when it landed in the boat. Delighted for him, but also fuming as I have never caught a thornie before. He then got himself a gurnard on the animal rigs, I got nothing. Then he got a doggie. My wife landed as some more macks, so we had some more bait, phew...
We then headed back in ad anchored on the rock in another attempt for a conger. Within a couple of minutes his rod was hopping again and he hauled up a conger. Again I got nothing.
Drifted the bank to get him a dab, but he got a weever, as did I. Nothing much doing there, so we headed to look for some huss, but finally his luck deserted them and we got nothing except for some pollack spinning.
My daughter finally got in on the act then and landed a pollack or two and some strange thing (an egg??) which if anyone can identify please do.
So comprehensively beaten by a 7 year old. In my defense I was making sure he was catching and it was a poor day fishing number wise, but still when we were both fishing he was outfishing me - and didn't he let me know it

Cheers lads, I am passing on your sentiments to him. He's very pleased with himself still. Going on about at breakfast again.

I told him that, but think he thought it was my excuse for never catching one
