Does anyone know what the species of fish is that swims in the river lee. They swim in schools at the surface. They are a large black fish and only appear at a certain time of the year( forget when). They would be very visable if you are crossing a bridge etc.

Sounds like Orca to me... they appear up the river every so often in the Summer months.
Either that or is's shoals of Mullet...

they're grey mullet, I've seen the first few stragglers already snuffling around union quay in the middle of last month, but they won't start arriving en masse for another few weeks and they'll be around for the summer.
and viper's not joking about the orca, two of them swam up as far as the opera house a couple of years back...

Closer to you in the Pill river you will see shoals of Mullet from now on mainly on a rising tide. Stand at the Park bridge or Johnstown bridge and you will see plenty of them. Some of them can be quite large. You will also see them at the Guillamene and the Quarry in Tramore.

occasionally you'd see a tourist going mad and buying a rod and reel trying to catch them.
