Need advice on rods

Hi guys

My wife and I are still relatively new to sea fishing, just started this year. We have had really valuable advice form all of you guys and now need some further advice on rods.

When we started we knew nothing and saw some rods in a sale which seemed a good price. However now we have been fishing for about 6 months we realise we have not got the best rods for the fishing we are doing. We usually use lures and feathers and so we are casting and retrieving an awful lot. What we have discovered is that the rods are really too big and heavy resulting in very painful shoulders the next day After a couple of hours we are knackered.

We don't know anything about rod types or makes and so wondered if you could point us in the right direction. Is there a particular 'type' of rod we should look at? What make of rod without being too expensive ? - we don't have deep pockets. What sort of length would be best? Single handed or double handed ?

We would be really grateful for any pointers.

shakespear have a range of rods called the salt range, they areally good value, you would get a set up for 100 quid

IMHO it doesnt matter what you spend on a rod wether it 20 euro or 500 euro the outcoome is still gonna be the same.

My preference is for a rod bigger then you anticipate ie if you going mack fish off aa boat use a 30-50 lb class rod with lighter rigs rather than 15-20 lb then if you lucky enough to hook a good en then you can play it to the surface rather than worrying about breaking the rod with bend. Same with a beach caster get one with a higher casting weight etc.

I bought budget tackle a couple of years ago 15 euro for 30-50lb fladen 2 mtr boat/pier and 45 euro for fladen 11ft 8 oz beach caster with a 5.2-1 ratio multiplyer and use it on both rods until me new level wind multiplyer arrives.

I think it all about the bottom end of your rig rather than how much a rod costs but that is only my opinion. Fleabay have some excellent rods for little money.

30-50 class baot rod for mackrel U must catch big mackrel were ur fishing . The salt range of rods are very good for the money I would go with them

i,ve got the salt mpv 10ft 2in casting weight 2-4oz,very good rod you could cast all day with it,and it has a good senistive tip which allows you to see the bites quiet easily if bait fishing,bought it for about 60e also have the salt beach fs 12ft casting weight 4-8oz good all round beach casting rod best weight to cast 6oz,cost about the same as the mpv,i would recommend both these rods, and no sore sholders afterwards

the shakespear salt is a great range for the price i coudnt recomend it more, i had the fs beach and it was a pleasure to feather macs all day with,,

wazza a decent 12, 30lb boat road will do for most if not all boat fishing around ireland bar the blues or porgies,,,
in fairness you didnt need the slating you got but welcome to the site,
and look around for a good 12, 30 boat rod, im using a daiwa tdx, have to say i love it and it handles everything ive thrown at it so far

I have a Salt fixed spool myself and I have to say I love it to bits. I bought one weekend I was away and had no rods with me. The boss gave the sayso for a few hours fishing so I picked one up off the cuff cause of the price. I have had everything from flounders to smoothies on it and she is a dream to use.

Another option would be a couple of 3lb test carp rods. You can pick them up reasonably cheap and you could cast them all day without any problems. The only thing you need to do is give them a good rinse under the tap at the end of each session.

Just a thought if you're wanting to keep the price down.

I appreciate all of the advice. I know Shakespeare from my Game fishing and so will go along with recommendations there. I have also found the 'Tidewater' range of their rods. Can you please give me your opinion of the following rods - they are all from their 'Tidewater' range and all sound reasonable but I would appreciate to know what you think between the 'Tidewater' 'Spin' - 'Bass' and 'Estuary' ? it was on roof of the shed that I have given them a bashing on. in fact i havent used me own tackle yet this year, used boats tackle but will be out with them M8 .

I dare say your quite the top angler but hey we all learn somewhere and after 40 years of coarse and game fishing Im sure this sea fishing will be just as pleasurable as long as the craic is good and crackpots stay home

to, be honest id stay away from the tide water range, they are basic as one can get, we sell quite a few outfits in the shop every summer, needless to say we get more returns than sence

Sorry warren if i insulted you but the advice i give on this site is based on more than forty years sea angling and over 30 years match fishing and i fish twice a week winter and summer and 20 odd years tournament casting i think by now i have a fair idea of what i am talking about although some my differ.
I give my hard earned experience to try and point anglers in the right directions when lads give unfounded or duff gen it get's me up on my high horse, and it's not fair to anglers who are trying to progress in our sport.

yep, agree with the rest of the fellas here, the salt range are great value for money. I also started out with a carp rod for mackerel fishing. it was great because it didnt weight a ton and I could hold it all day.

cheap parts, mate, they dont stand up to regular fishing. we've had everything from loose spigots, broken eyes and and jammed reel seats in the rods, the reels are even worse, the anti reverse always goes on the fixed spools, the bail arms usually pop off too, trust me spend a little bit extra and youl get an outfit that will last
