Garron Point & Orlock

#1 Post by nobuzz »

Guys,

I'm hoping to get to Garron Point and Orlock over the next 2 -3 weeks.

I know Orlock a wee bit but know nothing about Garron Point.

My main question is, what is the bottom like in these two venues, ie. are they tackle graveyards best fished with float gear or can you throw a 2 hook flapper out with a reasonable chance of getting it back?

Thanks in advance.

Garron Point is very rough ground close in but a reasonable cast will put you on decent ground. Strange place, one day you will lose tackle every other cast and on another day you will lose nothing. Use a grip weight anyway so the current doesn't roll your tackle into a snag. Best techniques at Orlock are definately sliding float rig and spinning. The bottom is thick with kelp beds, so the tactic is to float fish and set your depth a metre are so off the bottom, plenty of good Pollock and Codling will be hiding in the kelp waiting for there next meal when your bait drifts past. Both good marks on there day.

Rab,

Thanks for this.

Any other advice would be very welcome.

I think Daniel's ready to graduate from Donaghadee Pier.

Nobuzz- Garron is a tackle graveyard. I have lost a small fortune over the past three years. Dont have a clue about the other place tho, where is it?

Garron is not fishing overly well at the minute either. We have fished both from the shore and from a boat- both to no major avail. My advise would be to hug the bottom with a rotten bottom rig- about 50 yds out (pollock, collies and good doggies). We make our own with steel bar (borrowed from a mates work- with full intentions of returning them....lol). May be worth float fishing it with a good long hook length- can throw up good wrasse. Keep us posted.

I liberated several dozen old bolts from my father-in-law's garden shed.

Now I just need to figure out how to get an eye attached to them.
