the mayo wind tunnel pt 2 30-07-09

#1 Post by doggie3131 »

People:jason,john and me

Duration:7pm-2pm

Tide:12.40 high tide

Weather:lovely calm evening

Bait:squid sandeel mack

Rigs:pulley rigs, muppet rigs, two hook flappers

Results: huss, BIG huss,doggies

Report:had just recieved a reel(shimano aerlex 6000) from nicefish and after a very nice pm from yorkshire man,we decided to hit the "mayo wind tunnel"mark.Never been there before  so used kierans article in the irish angler for directions!(very good directions they were too) :D we were all fishing two rods for ray, with cocktails of sandeel and squid, mack and squid, all was quiet for the first hour, then john was first in with a doggie, but there was a bit of excitment as there was a wager who would land the first ray!talk about poxing the trip!! we were all getting bites that were unuasual, three knocks then nothing,if you lifted into them there was nothing there,if you left them to devolop nothing happened, normally the bait was stripped.any clues lads?then i got a good knock, struck, and was on,good fight and soon had a fine huss on the shore, forgot the scales, want to say it was a double but it was about 8-9lb,still was very happy :D :D :D(and it was the shimano that dealt with him) biggest by far this year, about half an hour and a few dogs later, jason got a good knock and was into a great huss which gave him a fantastic scrap, when we beached him we knew stright away it was double figures   big thick belly on her, huge head, about 10-12lb! :D the fish were working up and down the channel, one of us would get a knock,if we missed it then soon after the next person would get a knock, jason missed one, john did'nt! soon a smaller huss was banked, john happy :D :D about 5lb.there were a few more after that, but getting smaller and smaller, just before we quit for home(some one was moaning about work the next morning)i struck into something different, got it in but lost it to the weed, think it might have been a ray,but did not see it so who knows?pity about the ray but we will be back, great mark!!

Fantastic fish lads well done. I know what you mean about poxing the trip but sure it can't be helped hoping for a certain species. And with a result like that I would forgive the ray for another day
