Would anybody be interested in meeting up to try and get one from the shore?

I know the charter boat Clare Dragoon has got one 2 miles off, so i'm thinking
why not make a fish box of rubby dubby and try it. ( Kev, this is really your idea )

I was thinking to try somewhere round Ross bay and start at high water in the middle
of the day so the tide would carry the slick out. There's a lot of whitefish on the
reefs near there so theoretically there might be a porbeagle around.

Bill Ryan, if you read this what do you think, can you advise as to a mark that would suit?

It would be worth trying John, I've been thinking hard about this one for quite some time. I think you would need a period of very settled weather to give it a decent lash. I also think you need an area with a decent depth in front of you. Perhaps one of the marks near look head, that is not too far above water. The mark would need to be a decent enough Mackerel mark as well for the fresh dubby. Something worth considering, especially of the weather starts to play ball.

was thinking of using a cigar float rather than a balloon and weighing it down so the tide would
carry it the same way as the slick, not sure if there's a venue like this.

I guess the biggest problem will be finding proper spot. That you can place bait deep enough and let it be carried by tide, without catching weed and snags in the process. Other thing I can think of is that the mark needs to be reasonably accessible by car. Otherwise you need other "smart" way of carrying a box full of rubby dubby to the mark.

The idea looks interesting to me. I might be interested in taking part but will confirm that later.

HI John,

I've read that the sharks move that little bit close inshore during periods of settled weather. You also get a nice controlled release of the dubby bag and also as you mention, if your lucky enough to hook one you want a decent chance of landing it. A Cigar float running would be one way of suspending the bait. If you had an offshore breeze a pike drifter float might be worth thinking about as well.

Live Pollock or Mackerel on a non return slider would be a good choice as well. I think the key to this would be a constant Dubby slick for as long as possible to give the shark a chance to move inshore.

increasing your chances of meeting a shark.

from the shore, relying on the tide to take it out, not sure how long it might reach

The way to do it is by using a kite with a bait release clip to get the bait offshore but wind and tide conditions would need to be ideal A radio controlled model boat might be worth an experiment to tow a dubby dispenser out near the bait

The Kites do look the business alright, but as you mentioned conditions would need to be perfect. Another thing to think about.

That was going to be my second suggestion Myself and an angler down here have been planning an attempt at this for several years but have never put our plans into action we even got the kites over from Oz, don't use a block better to send a yak out with a good anchor with a large shackle attached to run the rope through, I would say you would want to go a few hundred meters at least and pray there are no boats going to prop the rope, nylon is too expensive unless someone donates it have a buoy line up from the anchor so you will see if it is holding as you pull the bait or dubby out the pully rope, splice the rope rather than knotting it or it may jam

Your also going to need to use braid or a very large multiplier for to hold enough mainline, we always believed an attempt from an Island or very prominent headland would be the most successful.

I would imagine you would need ALOT of rubby. Enough for a few days, that would increase your chances.

the mackerel are solid at loop head so i got 2 boxes of mackerel caught with
the gurdy by a local lobster boat. They use very big hooks and red or
white shrink wrap as the lure. i froze it down so should mash easily

the only thing is there is a fair old weight in two boxes of mackerel, Tommy
could you cycle it down to the mark on the mountain bike

Plenty of castles around with cannons out the front. I'm sure they wont miss one for a day!
