those reviews are very innacurate and misleading, basically full of inconsistant information. your better off pm'ing lads from the local areas on the site and get reliable info

Wouldn't bother with the Irish Angler magazine for information on shore fishing !
The articles/reports are, as Eric pointed out very inaccurate and misleading and IMHO written by people who haven't a notion of what they are writing about...also The ONLY articles worth reading in Irish Anglers Digest are those written by B.Cooke, The other sea related ones are a Joke :!:

Just an example.

I must say Pete and Brian are very good, however that is pretty much it for shore angling authors in Ireland.

It is a shame that the editors of the magazines just cannot see this.

I think it goes back to game fishing probably being the discipline of choice for the authors of Irish angling publications and thus have to trust there authors when they submit there articles and don’t realise that they may be actually be submitting a poorly written article.

I think an author has to sometimes put his/her hands up and admit that they cannot really contribute anymore.
Look at the UK publications they did excellent articles with the likes of Steve Allmark and Ian golds but they didn’t flog a dead horse and keep trying to get articles from these lads, they kept it fresh and got someone else’s point of view.

I am not saying that we want to see only top anglers writing articles far from it. However, on this site alone we have some excellent writers who are funny, knowledgeable and interesting and I for one would gladly pay to read there articles. On top of this maybe we do need some article’s /special’s from top match anglers or maybe have them fish off against each other and get someone to cover it for the mags.

And another thing...... How many more ways can people possibly write articles on fly fishing for bass. It is an interesting and fun way of fishing but really it is only targeted a very small minority of the anglers in this country. Come on lads freshen it up a bit.

We have some excellent anglers/writers in this country why not let them have a go and see what they can do. On this site alone I could recommend amoung others Pete, Alby, Eric and Lumpy, All these lads are good young(ish) enthusiastic anglers which in my opinion could add something to any publication.
There are many others and I think if any of you anglers out there are interested in following this path why not get in touch with the authors of these publications and go out and make a name for yourselves.

I am sorry for hijacking this thread but I think I have a valid point and that some of these things i feel need to be said. None of my points above are personal towards any one individual but towards angling journalism in Ireland
UP THE DEISE!!!!!!!

If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.

Well said JP I couldn't agree more, As far as Irish Angler I really dont understand why they bother with sea angling at the moment Pete's stuff is good and the dinghy section is good but its about 10 pages out of ninety odd:roll: Too much about SWFF way too much game fishing  I would like to see an Irish sea angling publication and as JP said we have some capable lads to contribute

a fish off would be brilliant, i think total sea fishing did something similar back in the day.
i for one would like to pete davies write a few articles, he is very well written and actually knows a thing or two about sea angling. not only this, ive yet to see kieran hanaran catch whiting on kfc? as jp said we have a nice pool of articulate, enthusiatic, talented anglers here who would put forth some enjoyable articles. i never want to see yellow mackerel used as an illustration on a 'how to present mackerel as bait' article again.

Right lads, if I can make a suggestion. I'm not comfortable seeing a load of lads lining up to have a pop at the guys who are going to the effort of producing an article each month. Whether its called for or not is not the issue, slaughtering the current crop of writers on a public forum isnt going to encourage too many more to have a go.

There is a lot more work than you would think involved in putting a good article together, between gathering info, taking pictures etc before even sitting down to type it out. Im trying at the moment to gather info on some stuff relating to charter boat fishing, an introduction to it and featuring some of the better ports and skippers and the weather seems hell bent on ruining it for me!

Following on from that, lets be constructive. What do you want to read about? Throw some suggestions down that are realistic and easily organised. Remember, for the most part, these articles are a one man job.

What do you think of some of these?

A day fishing with one of Irelands top match men who it has to be said dont get the recognition they deserve. I dont recall ever reading anything about the achievements of the likes of Dave Roe or Heiko Dreier in any of these mags. They deserve a bit of the spotlight.

A bit more coverage from the likes of the gold medal comps around the country, big opens and the like.

48 hours. Species hunts in various areas over a weekend, boat and shore.

A bit more emphasis on other areas of sea angling other than Dinghy fishing (which is well looked after BTW, good man Jim) and SWFF which has been covered to death in recent times. I would be hesitant to get involved in the tutorial aspect of things because as soon as you do that, you are setting yourself up to be taken apart by those who disagree.

The comp scene is largely ignored aside from Pete McG covering some on occasion. There is nothing much there from a beginners introduction to a lot of the disciplines either. I meet on a regular basis people from the site who need a dig out and some pointers. The same mistakes are made by pretty much all of them, a couple of articles would cover it. The boat scene is the same too. I dont profess to be an expert on any discipline but there are some handy dos and donts that will set you on your way.

Throw your ideas down and lets see what you can come up with. I have already approached David Dinsmore about doing some bits and pieces for the mag but for my own part, I prefer to write anecdotal stuff thats a good read rather than specific "you must use ten inch snoods combined with a 2 oz lead at an hour past high water otherwise you will NOT catch fish....." stuff :D

So, dont knock the lads already having a go. I dont think there is a queue of people beating down this mans door to have a go at writing for the mag and David is not a sea angler. But do put down what you want to see from the publications out there. Bear in mind that not everyone wants to read about match fishing either....
Fluff chucking is the new black..... Rampant Wreckfish is a fly angler in denial :D

I find regardless of the publication either here or over the water, the sheer enjoyment and craic that I associate with fishing is lost through their articles.

I Would like to see more shore angling features, I'd also like to see more coverage given to see angling and possibly a small section for match results and upcoming comps.
