Torr Head - Co Antrim

#1 Post by mrjed »

Hi there,

Me and my mate went fishing to Glenarm and decided to take a scoot up the coast to Torr Head.

Seen some great looking marks and ran into 2 friendly fellas who were fishing there, they told me about a mark where you head to climb down a rope but said they usually catch loads there.

Has anyone fished up round there before? Really too dangerous too fish alone or even explore.

Hi
Torr head can produce good results. As the to fellas told you it is a dangerous hole unless you know the area (sudden high cliffs) and are as sure footed as a mountain goat.

As for the rope- under no circumstances would I go down it again. Did it once and would never do it again. The edge you have to climb down is about 30cm wide. With an awful cliff beside you. It is tied to an old fence post- goodness know how long that has been there and is more than likely rotten.

My advice would be to fish the pier to the side of the mark- not too sure if you are allowed to. But as long as you are doing no harm I dont think any one would mind. You could set up a tripod and try throwing a beachcaster. Hope this helps.

p.s. was it a sunday you met the two guys and was one quite stumpy?

I have fished it a few times and have had some nice Pollack from that mark but as you have been told it is very dangerous place. Getting down that rope is scary stuff and then if it rains the rocks are very slippery so if you do go check the forecast and pick a good day for it and also let somebody know your plans for the day as their is no phone coverage at Torr Head and there is very strong tide rips around the head.

PS Travel very light with just the minimum amount of gear small back pack and one rod.

Cheers for the responses. I might give the place a miss...

It was a Tuesday we went down, would have been the 13th July as the office was dead and I nipped out fishing :)
