Shock leader required for Braid?

Do you need a shock leader on braid for distance casting or is braid not that prone to breaking as mono is? What strength of braid is sufficient?

You wll still need a shock leader if you are looking to put 4oz or above out a long way. Stick to the usual rule of 10lb breaking strian for every ounce.

Any good advice on knots for braid to mono?

Nice looking knot that. I'll give it a try. At the moment I'm using the albright knot. 10 turns down and 10 back. So far so good.

I think thats called the alberto's knot. It's the one I use but with only 7 twists each way.

I use 10 each way for my 20lb briad for spinning and plugging. I use a 20lb flurocarbon leader.

I use 7 or 8 each way for my boat fishing. 30lb Braid to 40lb+ leader.

I recently stripped off my tapered mono shockleaders and replaced them with much lighter 85lb Whiplash braid.
Also, I have abandoned mono leaders on braid for plugging after losing some expensive Yo-Zuris to crack-offs. Now run micro thin 35lb Whiplash right through.

I fish braid straight through no shock leaded I use 65lbs whiplash 300 yards fills 6500 nicely have been doing this for a few years now no problems so far.

Its also good when fish snagy areas as you can pull out with it easily and no big loses of line i would make my traces up with 40lbs mono and 15lbs droppers and some times use a rotten bottom it works well for me.

On using braid without a shockleader it can be quite dangerous when your hands get wet and the skin on your casting finger gets soft the braid can cut to the bone and rip the top off your finger it has happened to me a couple of times :x , so if you are going to use braid without a shockleader my advice is to use a finger stall or a glove.
Kstaff has always been the new black in my eyes anyway!!!!!!!

I agree... braid or not a finger stall helps a lot and makes your finger comfortable on casting. You can use the 2 finger glove used for playing pool. It has for both index finger and thumb so can be used for either fixed spool and multiplier. :D

I used to always use 30lb braid straight through for my plugging, but since I have switched to a Fluro leader I have seen an increase in my catch rate, especially in calm weather. If I am fishing a venue I don't know or know there is a strong chance of snagging kelp of rock I will fish braid straight through, but only then.
