Beginner North Dublin

Hi all,
I am looking at taking up sea fishing as a hobby and something to do with my 15 y.o. son.
I did a tiny bit of boat fishing and pier/rock fishing as a teenager a long time ago but nothing serious.
We are based in Swords so any advice for newbies on the coast from Howth to Greenore would be appreciated. Websites , Guides, Personal experiences, where / what kit to get etc.

Thanks to Wayne, Kstaff and Paul for the replies,pm's and offers of help/demo's.
Basically we want to start off getting a bit of kit together and learning from scratch.
Beginning with taking Mackeral on feathers/spinning (boring I presume for experienced guys) but it might help us with casting etc and it will be good for knowing how to catch them for bait later on. Then moving on to different species.

Can anyone give a "fishing for Dummies" list of essential tackle? If we were to head to a tackle shop and spend one or two hundred euro on tackle what should we buy. Hooks/weights/swivels/feathers/lures and such, Advice on what sizes, how many of each etc

For Makarel buy 6 sets of feathers and 6 of 2-3 oz lead weights, that's all you'll need to catch them. Buy a pack of clip swivels to tie onto your line on the reel, just clip the feathers on when required. That's it pretty much.

If you plan eating some buy a good sharp knife too and bring a tea towel for your hands!

the sets of 3 hook feathers are much easier to cast than the 6 hooks. also the ones with the silver that looks like tin foil are good in the evenings so grab a few sets of them. i think their usualy in sets of 4 or 5 hooks tho. if you find them too long just cut off 1 or 2 making sure you leave enough line for the lead.

Went to Balscadden tonight 6.30 to 9.15 incoming tide.

Blanked but felt good just to cast decently enough (50 -60 metres) and not lose any tackle.
On the lower rocks, about six lads there, only 3 mackerel taken.
Unfortunately the amount of rubbish lying around is disgusting, how hard is it to be tidy with your rubbish?
There was a seal swimming in front of the rocks for a while, so I'm blaming him on the blank.
It's a start though.

Hard luck on the blank you did well on getting a spot there as it always packed i went there last week at 6:30am and there was 4 people fishing there since 4:30am . I have blanked there 3 out of 4 times in the last month, the mackerel are a bit shy this year in howth dont know why,the water temperature is good 14-16, maybe they can smell all the rubbish that is left behind on the rocks we caught a few last week and the seal robbed a few of us you have to quick when you hook up reel in as fast as you can and keep your eyes open for him . better luck next time
