mayo mullet hunt 25.6.09 ( and round two 26.6.09)

#1 Post by davyp »

People: me

Duration: about 1 1/2 hrs

Tide: bout 3 hrs before high

Weather: feckin windy

Bait: fly - bread fly and pheasants tail nymph

Results: fun but no fish

finally got it together to have my first ever session after mullet,

fished a wee harbour where i had been told mullet gathered in numbers - arrived to find it very windy with a fair ripple on the water - which i thought would make it harder t see the fish - climbed up on the harbour wall and had a good look round with the poliarised glasses - nothing in sight for a few minutes - and then spotted the first big grey shadow - then loads more - with a few really good sized fish. ground baited with bread - but the wind was making it hard to get the bread out anywhere near the fish, whcih were mulling about with the odd one breaking the surface - eventually saw 2 fish taking the bread, but the wind and pushing tide seemed to be pushng any floating bread past the fish pretty quickly. had the flies on the nose of half a dozen fish which was seriously exciting - but no hook ups, or real signof interst from them

wind really picked up - making it impossible to groundbait more and hard to see the fish. decided to head to another spot for a wee bit of spinning - headed back to the harbour an hour or so later - the wind had dropped, but the fishys were gone. :( good buzz al the same - and will definitly be back to give them another go

Fool that I am went back for more this evening - harbour still too windy tho a good few fish about, tried a different mark

a wee lagoon that was hopping with loads of mullet but all small - probaly about the 1 lb mark

learnt loads;

- if you hang your waders in the garden to air, remember to put them back in the Car

- if you go wading in your bare feet crabs will try to eat them  ( seriously)

- if you go wading with your boots on crabs will climb up them and try to eat your bare legs

- midge repellent doesnt work if its in the car

- bring loads more bread

- dont daydream mullet can spit out hooks quicker than i can wake up if i am daydreaming about catching fish, hot spanish tourists, eating dinner etc.

- you can have an infinite number of last casts :D you still wont catch any fish

missed 3, hooked none

but despite it all had great crack, - best fun i've had not catching fish in ages

soon, I am sure

anyone tried the fake floating bread that course angler use? ordered some on line, an will try an make a 'fly' out of it.

also any one try casting maggots on a fly rod? does it work? was reckoning that if I had a wee bit of floating bread on the tail and a few maggots on the dropper that the bread would almost act like a float for the maggots?

will be back at them soon

Hi Davy

I have a good fly pattern i use for mullett.

all you need is olive green marabou.

Hackle this on to the hook all the way down so it forms a fluffy green body. You don't want it to be tied to dense. When the fly is finished get a lighter and lightly singe the outside of some of the feather, so that you form burnt blobs of feather.

This fly is meant to resemble a piece of floating algae that the fish feed on. It can be tied in white as well. I fish it subsurface with fluorocarbon leader. It works well with out having to ground bate in clam weather where you can stalk individual fish. (but not all the time as mullet can drive you round the bent  ) I tend to fish it in size 10.

Rory
