Kerry bass session - 32 Bass

#1 Post by Eoghan »

Same usual spot we fish every year. Plenty of bass, macks, pollock and 1 sea trout.
All fish returned alive.
Note we used single hook kilty lures. Made it much easier to catch and release.

32 Bass between 2 of us. Largest approx 4Ib down to the usual 2Ib schoolies.
All great fun on light tackle. Macks became annoying at times but they too were easier to return without having to touch them with the single hook lure. I'd say we lost approx 10 bass, given the numbers that about the same as a usual session on lures so no problem using the single hook lure from here on in.

Was tempted to switch to larger plugs to see if there were bgger fish about but we are so competitive nobody wanted to take the risk as the competition was well and truely on for bragging rights back in the pub. Most fish were returned while still in the water.
All good sport.

Retrieval was 3 quick then 3 slow. Most takes on the slower just after the 3 fast ones.
All bass teken over the low tide spinning between large rocks and over mostly sandy ground. Typical bass ground.
After the last time I was down and blanked this was a welcome session.

More of the same, you get the idea.... :-)
For all my waffle of how illusive bass can be they are making a show of me lately.

Cheers lads. Could do with a propper Bass though. Its been a while now since I had a 6Ib + Bass. Dont get me wrong, delighted with it but ye know what I mean.

I'd say the next few nights on any of the Wex/Wat beaches could throw up a biggie.
Might be time to bring out the bait rod and go after a lunker.

Well done on the bass E - but even more significant - advocating the single hook - which obviously didnt impact negatively on your fishing - but i bet of the 32 returned 32 went back with minimum hook impact/damage

again well done!

Tnks Jim, It was quite the opposite in fact. We could unhook them quickly and get the lure back into the sea to get on them again.
The single hook was great to use for the bass as they have such large mouths but especially for the Mackerel which we could unhook without touching them.
Only one bass (One pictured) was hooked badly as the hook was near its eye but went back fine and its eye undamaged. A close thing though.
All others were lip hooked and it was so much easier to remove the hook, most times with the fish still in the water.

Even the sea trout my mate landed was on a single hook german sprat..!
So I wouldnt be worried about the single hook lure again.
Too many times in the past I have spent minutes trying to get trebbles out of a bass.
Its precisely what prompted us to move away from them.

They were just too far out for the fly though, pitty..! :-)

glad the luck changed and fair play on the perseverance

Well done Eoghan, cracking result. Your were owed a good one ofter April.

Seems to be a little slow to get going this year. Let hope the sport holds longer.

Cheers MAC. Made it all the more rewarding.
What was even better was I was on my way to a specific mark (As per the PM yesterday you know where Im taliking about) when I stopped at a spot we never really fish much.
It was low tide and In my head I thought "That looks very bassey". First cast and whollop.

Was a bit slow alright at the start of the season but its shaping up to be a cracker.
September/Oct could through up some serious doubles. Fingers crossed.
