Report:Cobh SAC headed out today on a wreck fishing sortie. We were heading to try out two of Donie Geary's secret wreck locations. We stopped off at Roches Point for some macks but they were a bit scattered. Dave Jolly pulled up alongside in the 'Ohana' but hadn't much luck either. We headed off SW of Power Head and found them thick on the ground here. In no time at all we had a boxfull and enough for bait.
Sea conditions weren't too bad with a swell of no more than 2 metres. Unfortunately, when we arrived at the first wreck we found a couple of buoys marking its southern limit. The sounder soon confirmed a net hanging below. Donie joked that he could always use it as an anchor
. However, with the strong breeze from the south we were able to drift the length of the wreck from the net up. Fishing in the morning was quite good with a steady stream of good ling coming aboard, with everyone getting in on the act. Noel had the best ling of 7.5Kg, with Kevin & then Milo also coming close. Noel came close again with another lunker, but was just shy in weight to his previous fish. As we drifted off the wreck we picked up sizable whiting.In the afternoon we tried the second wreck further in. With the tide easing & the wind picking up the drift was ferociously fast. The sea state was also picking up and one or two of the lads were a slight tinge of green
. Myself and Mark opted to try for pollack. I put on a goldfish shad whereas Mark tried a purple firetail jellyworm. Both of us ran into pollack & coalfish. Interestingly, though, these fish were almost 100 - 200yds uptide of the wreck. The odd ling was also showing to the rest of the lads. Towards the end Milo & Noel decided to feather for mackeral to stock up the larders & the freezers. Eventhough, we were in 80m of water, there was plenty of gannet activity. The upper water column above the wreck was stuffed full of mackeral and the lads were bringing in full houses everytime. In no time at all Donie called for lines up as it was time to go. What a great day . I think we all enjoyed it immensely. Many thanks again to Donie, who once again proved why he's one of the best skippers on the South coast
