West Cork beach

#1 Post by red »

People, just me:

Duration, about 2130-1200:

Tide, LW around 2200ish:

Weather, lovely night, not even a breeze:

Bait, rag tipped with squid, fresh razor:

Rigs, 1 up, 1 downs size 2's:

Results, 3 bass :D :

Report
got to the beach at around 2130 and got set up with 2 rods. the surf was non existent but ive had good sized fish here in similar conditions so wasnt too put out by it. i had fresh razor on the top hooks for Bass and rag tipped with squid on the bottom hoping for a few flatties. the bait wasnt in the water long when the rod on the right started giving gentle knocks. i lifted it but felt nothing so put it back for a minute but it kept going. eventually i lifted into a fish but got caught in rocks and snapped the line, i reckon it was a flattie. just to make the night worse i got a nasty cut from the razor shell when baiting up a new trace. my finger was pumping so on with a bandage and out went the bait again but slightly to the left of the rocks. both rods seemed to be getting a lot of small knocks, just once and whatever they were they'd leave it again. this happened for the next 40 mins or so till it got dark and it stopped.
not long after dusk i got a good thump my new Bass rod and lifted into a fish. i figured it was a good size due to the bend in the rod but as it was my first Bass on it i wasnt sure what to expect. after a good scrap i landed my first Bass of the 09-10 season. 57cms and 4lbs 12oz. not a bad start  . not long after that i got another fish on the other rod but lost in on the way in.
i landed 2 more Bass later on, both on the new rod so i was delighted. 2nd fish of the night was a little schoolie, 39cms and 1lb 07oz but a very lively fish for the size of it. my smallest Bass to date. he gave a very good account for itself. last fish of the night was a nice 47cm Bass, 2lb 4oz.
no more takes after that so i left at around 12 happy enough after opening my account for the new 09-10 season. all 3 fish took the razor but apart from the first lost fish no sign of any flats.

Good going Denis 8) .

I was out for two hours myself around the same time last night. I had to be in to work for 12:00, but managed 4 fish. The best was this 65cm fish at 6lb 3oz. As you can see there was a lot of fine weed around which made fishing difficult.

nice one Pat. your really hammering them the last few days. the part of the beach i was on was spotless. not a bit of weed to be seen but the far end looked bad enough. i was there on the 16th and it was unfishable. a few days can make a huge difference.

Yeah Denis, but I'll have the boat in the water by tomorrow so I'll be after the real big 'uns. I'll have to do it discreetly, though, cause Donal Domeney might be keeping an eye on me  .

Sorry Denis, I'm not meaning to be smart, but you have a better chance of hooking up with big bass from a boat. To put it in perspective I had seven fish over 9lbs last season; six of these were from the boat, including one stonker of 9lb 15oz. Mind you I'm more than happy with what I've got and whatever I get for the rest of the season will be a bonus :D .

that was some haul last season, fair play to ya and not a bad start either this year.
looks like im gonna have to say a few prayers so for my specimen. the one i had a while back was a bit spent looking and still out there so hopefully will be a bit fatter and bigger when i get her again. thats the plan anyway :D .

Well done Dennis, great fishing.
I didn't see a sign of a bass all weekend - did a lot of plugging/spinning to no avail and some bait fishing last night on a beach that has produced bass in very calm conditions but all I got were 5 dogfish

I will have to give that beach of yours a go soon
