Galway bay - Aran

#1 Post by Peter Kinsella »

People: Self only

Duration: 3 hours

Tide: after high water

Weather: fine

Bait: feathers, baited feathers and mackeral baited paternoster

Rigs:

Results: Mackeral, spurdogs, whiting and haddock

Report: First spur chewed through 40 lb bs mono so changed to wire. Soon tired cacthing them so moved to Gregory Sound. Many haddock and whiting in deep water, around the 150 foot mark. All fish around the 1 lb mark. Mackeral seemed scarce. Inetersting watching a skua hassling gulls. I see why they are called shitehawks

Spurs were all of similar weight, about the 10 lbs. mark. That is my estimation. Must say that several seemed thick around the waist. This relates to a reason that I don't like to take them into the boat. I unhook them from the side. When boating them, they sometimes give birth prematurely. They are a fish that give birth to live youngsters.

Good stuff Peter, did you have many other Spurs following when you were winding in? We had up to 6 spurs following the hooked spur when fishing out of Brandon last year. They chewed through 150Lb mono
