Spider Crab wanted - Rosslare area

#1 Post by paulrobinson99 »

Lads
I had a taste of spider crab legs last week and I'm frantically looking at getting some more, the lobster men from Kilmore tell me that the lobster men out of Rosslare fish for them, so, does anyone have a name/number of any of the lobster men from Rosslare?

Thanks in advance
Paul.

You've gotta be joking, a win on Saturday against strong opposition, then up the coast the next day and nearly do it again, only to be beaten in both sessions by half a fish....you're the bloody one to watch :D

Nah, they would'nt taste as nice. This all came about cuz I was huddled over a pot last Friday with a mate of mine waiting for a big bag of brown crab nippers to boil when I spotted a spider crab leg about a foot long slowly turning red, neither of us had ever tasted them before so we could wait. As soon as he emptied the pot into the sink we both dived on the spider crab at the same time, it was like pulling a christmas cracker! It was about the thickness of a thumb, we split it in half and opened the meat, when we both tasted it we couldnt believe it, it was amazing, 10 times sweeter than the brownies, we had a few brownies straight after to compare, no comparison!!! Now I can't wait to get me hands on them again, just imagine....hot evening.....sitting outside with a bucket full of ice and some cool carlsberg bottles floating in it, on the otherside a big pot of spider crab legs, and on your lap a big bowl of melted butter and garlic.......ah man......carlsberg dont do spidercrabs, but if they did....... :P :P

cahore is a great spot for spidercrabs we would normally land some every year ill keep it in mind the next time i might have a go of one

is just the legs you eat, or is it worth opening the body up.

Yeh, there's a good bit of meat in the body, but the skeleton is fairly honeycombed, you need a lot of patience. If its your first time then keep to the legs (they're like steal), once you're in...yummmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Just boil for about 20 minutes (tell no one, its our secret)

yep the spiders taste better - but the meat from the body is more finiky to get at - but if your patient - and plan to eat it later - not as you go ( you greedy pig!) - its well worth it

as said before the meat keeps for 3 days and a good size one has plenty of eating in it

I have been down in rosslare strand most days now for the last 2 months, every day there is between 2-5 boats shooting pots the lenth of the beach for spiders. They are moored in the safe in rosslare hrbr. Also alot of the time they are hauling nets the lenth of the strand which i find a load of S**t . :!: lk fair enough they get a few dogs for the pots but what about the few bass, hounds, tope etc they net for bait? Anyway kinda went off the point there but to cut it short go to the safe in rosslare hrbr any day around 3 o clock if ya want crap of the potmen

Lol.... That was the only creature Ive hooked into that ever had to motor up the line to eventually boat. Had about 200 metres of line out as I'd left the bail arm open while doing something else. After the first 100 metres of hauling and the poor old abu premium doubled over I'd had enough. Start the engine Kev.... :D Somewhat gutted to see that come up though....

GD...the nets these boats are shooting are new nets designed for catching crabs...they have lead rope so they sink them to the bottom...im not sure how they work to be honest.... :?:

Ok fair enough but if it was the case that they were using these " new nets"?? well why would they be setting pots, as far as i can see they are netting for bait as is many other potmen all over ireland. correct me if im wrong,

The pots are for lobsters.
