The One That Got Away....It was this big.....

#1 Post by steveoel »

Ok lads so how about the stories about the one that got away???

No doubt there will be some tall tales but keeping as honest as possible, what was your one that got away?? :) :D
Mine was a beauty of a conger off Fenit Pier. I managed to surface him ato the top of the water and had him about twenty feet from the pier. He was spinning like a b*****d. and SNAP, the rig snapped where the snood connected to the rig body and he left me feeling pretty p****d off and shamed at my rig quality.  Which i have improved since!!!!!!

One night I was fishing the pier in Ventry, Dingle, gettin the usual doggies and rockling.. Got a bite somewhat bigger than the doggie rattle, but it would not give.. It was if somethin monstrous had taken the Bait and just started swimming off, oblivious to the hook in it's mouth.. could not gain any line back, eventually had to go for the break, as i wished to fish on and couldn't have done so if I had no line on the reel..

mine was a tope off a boat, hooked into a decent one and got him right beside the boat but the lads didnt have a gaff or net ready and i lost it. I was only using 20 lb snoods and the fish bit through it when it got to the surface, i was like a bull when the deck hand eventualy arrived with the net a minute too late as was stowed away.It is not saying much for the charter boat in question come to think of it dont think its still in operation. Also lost a big fish from the shore a couple of weeks ago, hook snapped in the surf, reckon it was a big bass

my big fish was in the red sea, trolling around a reef, the only gear the boat owner had(work mate of me da) was big reels aka winches with big line(80lb bs I think) and serious boat rods, one piece jobs full rollers, anyway i get a hit and lift into the fish, the reel sceams and my da grabs my shoulders as i am being pulled overboard (and i am not small even at 18 years old) the reel is on full drag and the line is just peeling off it, gets to the leader knot, the rod doubles and ping goes the line,,,,,,,,, oh how i wish i could have landed that fish, dont know what it was, then again maybe i dont wish to know

My one that got away is from last July. Myself, beebub2 and Marco out on a Bulloch Harbour boat. Warm summers evening. Half a box of mackerel on board already. I had a line of feathers on the boat rod and for some reason I put a rag baited flowing trace with a 2/0 hook on my light spinning rod with 8lb line. We tied up on the lobster pots and as you can imagine I had a serious knock on the spinning rod. Marco was certain it was a "Rockfish" but I knew it was something different. You just know don't you? There is a certain electricity that doesn't come from snagging a rock.

Anyway after about a minute of saying this line isn't strong enough, it snapped and that was that. I'd be pretty sure that it was a good Wrasse. I had pulled out a two pounder on the boat rod half an hour before so I'm thinking that I'm not too far wrong on my guess.

Anyway it was a great session as the weather was perfect, we caught a good amount of fish and had a great bbq after with a few half decent bottles to acompany the macs. As I always say, two bbq macs, a couple of new potatoes, a green salad and a bottle of decent wine in the fading sun makes stephen8wood a happy man.

Happened me twice. SWFF and fish broke 12lb leader.

But the one that really sticks in my mind is when I was about 7. I was fishing with a hand line , through a grate in the middle of the bridge in my hometown.
Most people would have laughed, but at that age I wasn't aloud to go out fishing on my own and we did catch some big sea-trout there. We'll one day the line took of at huge speed, there was nothing I could do handline and all wen't down the grate  To this day I think it was the biggest salmon I ever hooked.
