Wicklow On A Sunny Aftrnoon

#1 Post by dfella25 »

Me and bro (Gerry):

2pm till 6pm:

High at 3and dropping:

Very sunny!:

Rag:

Rigs:

Me: 8 Ballon Wrasse, 1 Pollock, 3 Tompoy Blenny's, 1 Dab and an unknown Fish
Gerry: 3 Ballon Wrasse, 1 Coalie, and 2 dabs.
:

My brother and myself decided to make the most of a nice day and head to Wicklow. My Third visit in as many days. We collected some rag and headed off on our merry way. When we arrived and walked down the pier we were met by a gang of teenagers in school uniform  They made some mess and we were glad when half three came along and they headed for home. WE set up two rods each. One in close and one at distance. I was iun first with a couple of Wrasse in close. Again I wanted a cokwing for the photo I missed on Friday. I had no luck on that front! Gerry then pulled in a nice couple of dab's from his cast rod.

The bites came fast after that for both of us and I picked up my first Pollock of the year. I missed the photo on it as it took ages to unhook him so I slipped him back in. No monster mind you only 20cm. I took out a spare rod and dropped a few feathers in to see would a Pollock pick up on them but no luck. Now I'm two photo's short for this mark  I also picked up some Tompot Blenny's and a small fish that I have no idea what it was.

I quietened off then as the was went slack and out of the blue Gerry pulls out a coalie!!! :o I thought they were a night species and thought they may have slipped of for the summer. Nice fish just over 30cm. I never caught one so I was well p!$$ed off  Ten while I was on the phone I put my small rod down and within seconds it bent right over. A quick battle and I landed a 37cm Ballon Wrasse!! My personal best so that kinda made up for the coalie. Within a few minutes I was brought back to earth when the misses called and reminded me that I had a family so we packed up and headed for home.

Any help with the fish ID would be greatly appropriated. Also Gerry caught a very nicely spotted Wrasse (Second Pic) and we are wondering if its a Ballon too.

Hi mate, soz I wasn't able to get back to you. Spent the day in battle with the government! I really really have to get down there for a day with you, looks like a cracking sesh for daytime! I saw a thread on here a while ago with the fish you couldn't identify but can't remember the name, I'll do some research and get back to you.
Fish 2009; Whiting, Dab, Pollock, Short Spined Sea Scorpion, Flounder, Ballan Wrasse, Bass, Blennie, Tompot Blennie, Coalfish.

The first fish looks like a rock goby but I am not 100%. The second fish is a Corkwing Wrasse.

Sounds like a good wee session plenty of variety.

My battle starts today man so I know the score! It's great to get a few daytime sessions under my belt after a winter of long cold wet nights catching whiting
