Got a pointer from Red, thanks again mate, and went around to have a look. The tide was way too low so I decided to move on and perhaps return later. I had a spot in mind and set up the beach rod with crab and rag on a two hook boom rig. I cast this out and set up the second rod with a single flowing trace with rag on. As I went to cast I noticed the beach rod’s line had gone very slack so I checked it and got a very hard knock - and then nothing. Left the rod and cast the second one and again the line on the beach rod went slack. I lifted the rod and reeled in a bit and then felt a fish on. After a nice fight I landed a flounder which measured 39 centimetres. It had swallowed the hook, and the beads and anything else on the rig. It had taken rag but I noticed the crab had been savaged and replaced it.

Kept getting small knocks but no connects for a while and then got a second flounder on the beach rod which measured 28 centimetres - and gave a cracking fight. It too had swallowed everything. Cast back out and as I was settling the rod I got a couple of heavy knocks which were not flounder-like. Reeled in and saw the crab had again been savaged and was literally hanging by a thread.

Fished on for a while and noticed the second rod top nodding over and then easing off so I lifted it and was into a third flounder again at 28 centimetres.

Kept getting bites after that with a couple of heavy knocks that I could not connect with, but they all were at the crab bait as the rag on those occasions came back untouched. Around high water the bites stopped and I hit the road.

All in all a nice outing and am already looking forward to my next trip south.

PS: went to a small beach a day or two later to return the last of the crabs and as I walked down to the water a bass cleared the water about 25 feet out. Big gob on him as he swung his head and must have cleared a couple of feet. Unfortunately I’d no rods with me and was expected at a friends place for dinner.

no worries mate. ive only fished that spot a few times with best results at low water. had 4 flounder there a few weeks back and it was only about 5 or 6 foot deep in the middle with all fish being caught nearer the far edge in 3-4 foot.
