Rigs: Feathers (Black Head) Flappers (Sorrento)

Results: Blank (Black Head) 2 Whiting & 1 Flattie (more on that later – Sorrento)

Report: Spent a week in Ballyvaughan last week and managed to get out at the last minute one afternoon to Black Head with the brother-in-law (that’s him in the photo). Nothing doing. Were were out for about 3 hours in two spots. Met a few others at the second spot who’d been there maybe two hours and also blanked. I think it’s a bit too early. That said, if ever the phrase ‘fishing is not all about catching fish' was apt it certainly is for 3 hours in glorious sunshine at Black Head. What an amazing place to spend a few hours quiet fishing. Fantastic. No qualms about blanking.

Went to Sorrento Point on the rocks last night with Stephen. Unfortunately Stephen blanked. It was very quiet. Nice night though, quite mild. I caught one small whiting early on and then nothing until the very end. The tide was heading out for the first hour and then coming back in for the last two. My last two casts provided a fish each. One was an ok sized Whiting (approx. 22 cm). The other caused some debate amongst us. Two pics attached. Dab or Flounder? At first glance I thought it was a Dab, but then the brown marks made me think Flounder. Any thoughts as to what it is? It couldn’t be a plaice could it? I didn’t think Plaice as it has no orange spots. Thoughts appreciated.

The shape would indicate to me that its a dab.

Dab's like flounder will vary in colour & markings.

Fair play for sneeking out a few fish , and bad luck to stephen

Thanks Shamoo. If that's the case I'm rather pleased. A Dab would mean a new species for me. Although will there be those who dash my hopes of a new species and tell me they think it's a Flounder??

Didn't mind the blank. Was using 3/0 hooks to avoid the last of the micro whiting and I did that at least. One interesting thing about Sorrento Point is the howling that comes from the direction of the island at night. I don't think it's a fox and I'm not sure if the seals howl. Any ideas? Maybe it's Enya from up the road?
List 2010. fish

List 2011: less fish

2012: less fish again,

2013: even less fish.
