mullet spawning season?

#1 Post by dunner »

Anyone know exactly when the mullet spawn?
I was trying for them tonight with bread, but they seemed to be ....well....doing something else....
I put bread right on their noses...not interested!

As far as I'm aware mullet spawn in the open ocean not in the estuaries, they are also fractional and of course have no defined season. Fish dont respect dates and spawning is determined by other factors such as temperature, light, food supply etc.

Thanks Jim.
They were at one point grouped in a very large shoal and it looked like they were squirming all over each other in very shallow water and very excited... def. not feeding and it was an estuarine area, so who knows??
Still its nice to have some mysteries!!!!

from what i know thick lipped only spawn every other year.
i was talking to a bloke the other day who witnessed similar behaviour during the height of the summer.he said he could only describe what he saw as "spawning behaviour".
we`ve found a spot in Strangford lough where there are young mullet of 3-6 inches,so its very possible that that what he saw as its was only a mile or so away from the baby mullet.

thick lipped mullet spawn in late spring near the shoreline. Their eggs are laid freely above rough or rocky ground, the fry hatches after about a week and feeds on plankton until they grow to 10-15 cm (normally within a year) - full maturity is reached after 4-5 years.

Often found that up here, early on in the year when they appear first they seem to just skulk around nudging & butting eath other (similar to mating rituals you see in Coppers on a Sunday after a GAA match :D ).

But when the water heats up in may or early june they begin to switch on to the bread.
