North Clare

#1 Post by beebub2 »

I'm heading there for a week in April and will be bringing a few rods with me. I'm new to this fishing malarkey and so have only really fished in the proximity of south Dublin/ North Wicklow (apart from 2 boat trips) and so I've been confined to catching the standard fare for these parts. (i.e. whiting, whiting, whiting, whiting, rockling, whiting & whiting)

I fancy catching something different. Any recommendations of locations would be greatly appreciated. Even just general areas to fish and what fish to expect and what bait they like if people didn't want to give specific marks.

Or a PM with some more specific info :D

Either way I intend to just try to find a few marks of my own; part of the fun is seeking out new places to fish yourself.

well clare is a big county when you realise its mostly shore

its in three parts - north west and on the shannon estuary

depending on offers to be shown spots i would base yourself in one of these areas

as your down for a week i would recommend a few days on the estuary and a few days in west clare

youll get your huss and ray on the shannon - and then out west chance of bass on the storm beaches and big wrasse off the rocks

i know north clare fairly well - but you have to be prepared to blank!

Ah if only I was going on a week's fishing holiday!

It's a family holiday with the three sprogs in toe. If I get out more than once during the day I'll be very lucky. I might get a few evening sessions in mind, once the winkies are in bed. I'll be based in Ballyvaughan and likely won't want to travel too far, particularly for any evening sessions I do. Any good spots near here? I read a few reports recently for Fanore beach which isn't too far away, but none was very encouraging. I don't mind the occasional blank as obviously it's not all about catching fish, but if a particular spot is notoriously bad I'd sooner try somewhere else.

Thanks again.

Try Blackhead, 8/9 Km west of Ballyvaughan. And see these places.... http://www.sea-angling-ireland.org/shore%20-%20clare%20n.htm

Hi

Blackhead can be very hit or miss, often a feast or a famine.

A bit further south you have Ballyreen and Ardkeen, good for fishing over high water for flatties, rays dogs and huss. Congers too and these should be avaialble in April...

Time spent fishing is never time wasted...

2015 targets - a triggerfish, a specimen bass, a three bearded rockling to complete the set and something big and toothy from certain north Mayo deep water marks
