I was wondering if anyone has ever been on a shore-angling trip to England. A few of us are planning one to somewhere around Newcastle next winter for the chance of a double-figure cod. I was hoping someone may have undertaken one of these trips before and that they might let me know the best way to plan it, where they fished, stayed etc?
Any information would help?

ok ...double figure cod ..forget dunge , too many whiting, selsey near portsmouth has a good reputation as an autumn cod venue and yes chesil does produce but you need to know where to go on 18 miles of featureless stones! Try chesilanglingtours.co.uk, Pete really knows this place ....

Forget Selsey - 4 people, mostly 2 rods each, 4 hours up to high tide, every bait you can think of, about 3 times this winter and the highlight was the night we got 2 or 3 whiting each. I've not heard of any good cod catches there this winter, but I would be happy to find out I'm wrong :)
Best place I can think of is ....... Ireland - west coast probably..... Friendly people as well :)

Places to stay.
Wonderful site for accommodation anywhere in the World. The UK part that this link goes to has a clickable map. Not exhaustive but covers almost everywhere: http://www.s-h-systems.co.uk/index.html
And another useful UK one is this: http://www.5minutesaway.co.uk/
Gives you places to eat, sleep and play within 5 minutes drive of motorway junctions. Saves eating the sh*te in the services. Hope it helps.

Never fished down there, but beware the Portland Race heavy tackle required. Very Very scary if you're on a boat. Pennsylvania Castle Hotel, is the place to stay. Try the Blue mountain Trout for dinner excellent...........

fishing england
Eight of us fished the British Open last year 2004 . Fishing area from Bridglington to Spurn point. 40 miles approx. Every bait we could think of came with us. even fresh mackerel caught in Ireland packed in ice never frozen. I was the only one who caught a counting fish over 2 days, of the eight. 1250 anglers weighed in 184 over two days.
we were leaving the beach on the first day, and a few english lads were going on, their retort was ,, what are you doing here, there is no fish here, we are just passing the time, until we go to Ireland where their is fish.'' Theh heaviest fish was a cod caught on a first day and stayed over for the next day, it would have been no more than 2 kilo.

a point or 2 about selsey
Selsey like most southern UK beaches for cod can be hit or miss...but the basics are
1. fish the point, 2 groynes to left of pipe or 2 groynes back to the left (i.e. leave out 2 groynes unless you like rocks)
2. fish 2 hours down and 2 up (its poor over high)
3. Peeler crab is by far the best
4. Bizarrely an easterley blow can be as good as a SW, and its less weedy !
oh and mind out for the bass......
