Re: south america trip
From personal experience - keep you reels in your hand luggage. Nowadays, that may mean unloading the line off them, and putting it back on at your destination. I never liked the thought of my expensive reels at the mercy of hold baggage.
Have a proper strong carrier for your rods. Use a Bazooka or similar, or adapt a length of downpipe. Pad the ends with a bit of sponge. Even better if you can get away with travel rod or telescopics, and stuff them into your baggage.
Let your airline know that you're going to be taking rods - there may be an extra charge.

Where you headed - in Chile and Argentina, its cheaper to hire (quality gear) on location.
Ditto some of the charters on the bigger amazon rivers for the peacock bass, red cats etc.
Not so sure about the highlands, Peru, Bolivia etc. Fresh or Salt?
Spent a year there...

Time spent fishing is never time wasted...
2015 targets - a triggerfish, a specimen bass, a three bearded rockling to complete the set and something big and toothy from certain north Mayo deep water marks
