Gilbey's Mark, Pollock Holes, Kilkee 26th Feb. 2009

#1 Post by Ross »

People: Ross

Duration: 1 hr around LW

Tide: LW

Weather: Dull, fresh Southerly

Bait: Sandeel

Rigs: 28 grm. drilled bullet, 1 m. flowing trace

Results:
5 Pollock
1 @ 6 lbs.
2 @ 5 lbs.
1 @ 4.5 lbs.
1 @ 2 lbs.

Report:
Fished Gilbey's Mark. 10 mtrs. of water just off a kelp fringed reef.
Sink and draw sandeel along a sandy bottom. Pollock plucked at sandeel first before
savageing them! The temptation is to strike early. Let the take develop and hold on tight!
Some good fish lost in heavy kelp.

fished around that neck of the woods last year "Ross" :)
amazing area. we fished low to rising tide and had to retreat
several times with the rising tide, similar results too.
we also got enough mackeral for our boat trip saving us valuable
boat fishing time. love to go again.

Hello Ross,
Fair play to you and thanks for the eye opener! (Never saw a better shore report for pollack in Feb, and it's some of the best pollack fishing reported)

Local anglers have beeen catching good Pollock here for the last few weeks. Best topped 7 lbs.
Going to try bottom fishing here with lug maybe pick up good flounder. Has anyone tried?
Heard Triggers were caught here last Summer. Divers have also seen Red Mullet.

Nice fishing Ross,

K/C told me about your post and its nice to see the Pollock are around … you asked if there’s a chance of flounder around there and after the chat I had with 3 English anglers that I met on the beach in September I would say most definitely yes they are there,

They had been told earlier by some very unhelpful people that they spoke to around the pier that there was no chance of fish from the rocks to the right of the pier… if that was the truth then I must be the lucky one because I have had great sport there from Pollock / Rockling and conger,

After being told the right side of the beach was no good they got set up on the rocks to the left and fished bottom and seen as they are not from the area I would imagine they used fish baits because as you know fresh worms are not available to buy around there and you would have to know where to dig them,

They ended up having a good day with small flounder and amongst other things they said they caught small turbot… I can only go by what they told me but they seemed genuine enough,

Its not going to be much hassle for you to have a second rod out for the flounder while spinning for Pollock so ya I would give it a go,
