Results, Whiting by the bucket load, lost count, none of a decent size

Not sure how to best report the tide except to say it was coming in when I arrived and fully in when I left! Another case of the Bray Harbors again. First cast on both rods got whiting and it was constant after that, Had to cut to one rod just to give myself a break. They go mad for the glo beads these whiting, I was dying to get something else but no joy. I enjoyed my last whiting plague but this was getting a bit annoying. Had a flatty rig out too but got whiting, Tried putting out huge baits but still the whiting hooked themselves. But anyways good fishing I suppose. Had my new Shakespeare Salt tripod out and Im delighted with it, Very sturdy must get it onto the beach at the weekend. Thats about it! I think Im on my way to the 500+ whiting mark, Do we get to join a special club?

Had full braid on one reel for the fist time, a short spinning rod not a distance caster but the braid gave me confidence to really whollop it without with fear of a crack off and got some good distance but I found that the braid doesn't come off the reel (fixed) as fast as mono, there seems to be a friction at the end f the "arc" that reduces the distance. Anyone notice this?

Hi, great report. Those nights with just the whiting are great craic the first time. Gets a bit boring after that doesn't it! What way did you have the braid tied to the rigs? Was it with shock leader first? I never found the casting to be different with braid but then I mainly use it on the lighter rod for close in and spinning. I always use around 4 feet of mono (20lb fluoro) when spinning with braid and at least 15ft of shock leader (40lb) when rig fishing.

at least you caught something, i was on greystones south near the stream from 5.45 until 8.45 and all we caught was one whiting.

sounds like you had plenty to keep you busy i always keep a light spinning rod in the car for when the wee fish move in. they're great crack on light gear. we'll be down on saturday fishing that spot with eyes. my young lad is chasing his first dab of the year . might see you about, tight lines, Al.

Em...... I don't use any shock leader shame! But its when the cast is at its peak that I notice the "braking" on the reel, Maybe I need need to rewind the line. Im desperately after a dab myself, ANything but a whiting, I was praying for a doggie last night. The steps is a good spot, Im going to try on the opposite side on the rocks next time, see if theres anything else around.

Out of interest, do you have a shallow spool on the reel or the normal one that will handle lots of nylon? I recently changed to the shallow spool and found that much easier in terms of the braid coming off the spool during the cast. This is because of the much lower diameter of braid, you don't need the extra space. If using the deeper spool it tends to have to catch over the lip of the spool. Hope that helps

what braid are you using some have a very waxy feel to them and stick together a bit on the spool ,this will wear off after a few sessions ,grauvell do one called dynagrey (i think ) its great stuff and not sticky ,some of the very thin braids suffer from digging into themselves 30 lb is thin but not too thin 20lb normally ok but 15 is gonna give problems if you are using alot of lead

Its Fireline 30lb, it looks and feels quite waxy, maybe it just need to loosen up. But Im now a braid convert, indicates bites better, reacts less in the wind and my sharpest knife struggles to cut through it.
