Report:
Beautiful sunshine & a flat calm sea greeted the 17 members of SAISAC to Arklow South Beach today. After recent reports & competitions on the venue we were looking forward to some great fishing.
All manner of rigs flew out at 4 o'clock in the hope of plenty of fish, it was soon apparent though that the whiting & flats that had been everywhere on this venue a week ago were thinner on the ground than normal. Plenty of small fish were coming in along the beach, but very few counters and only Mark Beatty & Mark Sinnott managed a counter early on.
There was more fish being caught from the high numbers, however the lower pegs were producing more counters which made it a very interesting comp. Word on the street was Cormac Walsh had a nice 32cm flat which would eventually give him the pool, but the lower pegs were struggling to find numbers of fish, while myself, Eric Gas. & Al were hauling in double & trebles most casts at the other end of the beach.
Later on I got word Seaniebo had hit a double of dogs & Dennis had begun to hit some counters in the middle along with Marco, Fintan (Croppyboy) & Keith Murphy.
Come 9 'clock nobody was too sure who had won or what the top positions would be, as the guys in the middle had decent numbers of counters (6's & 7's) while the higher numbers had 3's & 4's but big numbers of undersize each counting for 5 points each!
The closest of finishes left Dennis & Eric on equal points but with Eric having caught more fish (44 against 27) gave him his first SAI MA win.
Fintan finished strongly to get 3rd place just behind the 2 lads, an extra fish would have given him the victory. I took fourth just ahead of Keith Murphy who pipped Mark Sinnot for 5th. although one undersize fish for Keith or Mark could have moved them up 2 places
There was also a 3 way between Boycie, Seanie & Mb.3 (nice
