portavad and dunmoran strand, sligo 17.2.09

#1 Post by davyp »

People: me an Brendan

just before low tide at portavad, bout 2 1/2 hrs before HT at Dunmoran

Weather: calm and warm

Bait: sandeel, mak, squid, prawn

Rigs: 2 up diy feeder rigs ( Inside of a kinder egg with holes in it - sturdy and works well :-)

Results: Portavad blank,, Dunmoran , Brendan 1 doggie, me 1 Whiting ( bout 20cm)

Report:

Corbys post earlier in the week , combined with a decent day inspired me to go scouting in daylight, Knew the tides were crap, but was just glad to escape work for a while,

went for a nosy at portavad - Crabfest - little feckers had baits stripped in no time. saw somthing moving in a wee calm spot and tried a spinner, first cast landed slap bang in the middle of a shoal of mullet, as soon as it hit the water there were fish diving for cover everywhere :-) , had no really light gear to try for them - so left them too it.

nothing showing, in the calm thought i might have seen a few sea trout on the move, or picked up a few flatties - but nada

with bait running low, decided to get some grub, and try dunmoran as it was handy - mate brendan had a doggie after bout 15 mins, with me getting the whiting a few minutes later, thought things were looking good - but that was it - not another bite,

Still, at least we didnt blank, and got a good scout at low water in daylight at portavad

Davy
Ive tried portavad loads of times and blanked each time never been able to reach the main channel and like you said crabfest there are some cracking mullet about though last time i was there the little lagoons were full of them.
was down there one evening in the summer walking back to the car when i heard a woman shouting for here kids to come out of the water. Looked to were she was pointing and saw a pair of otters playing in the water told here they were just otters, she said no look further out and just by one of the fishing saw a pair of fins cruising up and down, think they were Tope obviously at this point i had no bait left other wise i would have thrown out a mac just to see.
cheers
mike

Looks a fishy kind of spot down there and enough tide run to suggest potential tope, have any of you tried big fish baits there?

Hi Pete
It does look fishy there alright but I have never tried a big bait for tope. A guy who had his boat moored there once told me that you would see loads of tope cruising up and down by the boats. Myself and Yorkshire man have fished there but it's always frustrating. However this summer I am going to fish hard for the mullet in the lagoons there's tonnes of them. I gave it a shot last August but didn't connect with any. They seemed a bit shy of the bread, I think I'm going to have groundbait for a few days before fishing it to get them used to the bread. There is also some seatrout hotspots along there and I've been told from next month on it really gets going.

Cheers
Shane
