SAI SAC MA #1 - Donoughmore Beach Wexford

#1 Post by alby »

People:20

Duration:5 - 9.30pm

Tide:HW 10pm

Weather:increasing south easterly wind & very wet rain

Bait:you name it...

Rigs:all kinds of weird concoctions

Results:whiting, dabs, flounders

Report:
It was an interesting cross country excursion for most of us, We were diverted up the Wicklow mountains into redcross and back down onto the N11 for the first leg of the 2009 Shore MA (Bad accident on the N11).

As 20 hardy anglers trapsed onto Donoughmore Beach conditions were flat calm, no wind of which to speak and very mild as we got off to a start at 5pm, (an hour late due to the traffic diversions). The fishing was consistent from the off with most people picking up a few counting dabs or whiting in the early stages, things looked good for big numbers of fish to be caught.

About an hour in, as forecast the wind began to strenghten from the south east and the surf began to build, a change over to heavier lead was needed to stop gear being washed back up on the beach and the usual crossed lines began to become a problem, all sorted in good natured way “I think that’s my trace” as whiting laden gears were dragged from the surf.
The weather got steadily worse with the wind freshening & driving rain but word on the beach was Dennis was doing his impersonation of “the atlantic dawn” bringing in fish to beat the band on peg 17. He ended up with 44 fish in total and 30 of them over the 20cm limit, an excellent haul and making him a clear winner.

Marco was also picking up numbers at a steady pace, as were Neil & Keith. In the end Dennis was a clear winner, with Marco finishing second with 16 counters, Neil third with fourteen counters and Keith pipping me as we both had 13 in and a good few out.

Very wet scorecards were given to JDizzle back at the schooner before the scores were totalled. As usual tales of woe were exchanged about lost fish, problems etc. none more so than Mark Sinnott (Fishaholic) who broke 2 rods on the beach...expensive comp!!!

Great to see new faces too, I hope George, Cormac, Neil & Declan enjoyed their first SAI Comp. Hopefully we'll see you all in Arklow on 21st Feb.

Well done all,,,,was a wet and windy night alright  .I was on the rocks in Greystones and it got a bit hairy. Hope to make it to Arklow next month. I took that detour coming back to Dublin from Ennereilly one night and ended up about 15 miles further down the n11   . I made sure i got proper directions from the Garda when he stopped me the second time    .

fair play Dennis, and thanks for taking the time to mark my scorecard in between all your running about with whiting

I would have fished it harder, but seeing as I put my knee out earlier that morning i wasn't in the best form for casting/reeling in or fishing in general, but hey glutton for punishment
