Cod/ Codling

Hi,

New to this malarkey and fancy catching a cod. Even a codling would do. Any advice? I read that they'll eat anything but what bait in particular is good for them? And what about the type of rig to use, does this make a difference?

Am I wasting my time trying to catch them from the shore in Dublin? Am I right in assuming that it would need a reasonably long cast from a beach?

Would rock fishing be more productive given that I'll probably get a little further out from the rocks?

Finally, of course I know how anglers like ot keep specific marks to themselves so I'm not asking for one, but a pm with a general location would be greatly appreciated.

Any advice is very welcome.

in one word YES

again, my answer is YES, you should be able to reach Cork waters to have a fair chance

in dub some of the marks that will produce now are,,, bug rock, behind the baths in dun laoighaire,,,,, the forty foot in dalkey, back of bulloch harbour dalkey of the rocks,,, collimore harbour dalkey,,, killiney beach by the tea rooms,,, the shankill end of the beach to,,,,

all these will produce codling if ya put the time in, best baits on all venues lug, squid and peeler

codling can be caught from dublin all the way down the coast to cork and so on
crab and lug i find the best bait
if want to catch codling you may put in the hours
big baits on pulley rigs min 3/0 pennel
codling can be caught day or night ,keeping bait from the whiting is the
only problem
so bottom line is put in the hours and you will catch codling

That's great dbrock. Thanks a million. What about tides? Is there a better type for targeting codling?

And Austrian, what's with the attidute man! surely there are no silly questions from a beginner?? How else am I going to learn than by asking the fountains of knowledge that hang around here? Of course the best way is just to go fishing and find it all out for myself. I intend to do this, but a few pointers to get started is always welcome

get a bit of a chop and a rising tide for bug rock, can throw up some nice fish at this time of year. i'd stick to the rough ground marks, there most likely to throw up the better fish. as dbrock said the tea rooms(the life ring or the tunnel are the best parts) or south of quinn's lane(straight out from the entrance or down to the right) along the killiney stretch, are your most likely bets, be prepared to loose gear, i usually fish with 25lb straight through with a short lob distance inst critical here as you should be fishing at night, 80 yards maximum, most fish will be around 40 odd, once your snagging up you know your in the right place. simple one hook flappers are ideal, big lug and mussel bait will see you right too.try to fish a rising tide, its totally dead on the ebb.
if the waters rough though they will venture on to the clean stuff,your most certainly gonna come into contact with the coalies, night time is the best.

Bug Rock is the venue to break your duck.

Rising tide, casting slightly to the left (towards Dun Laoghaoire West Pier) will see you land in a gulley where whiting don't really hang out. Small plain lug baits on size 1 or 2 hooks are best, a cast of 40 yards will see you catch plenty of fish, I've never had any really big fish here, but loads to about 1.5 - 2 lb.
