newcastle beach 3/01/2009

#1 Post by davethomas1 »

7pm-12.30am
Bait Rag and Lug
Pics None

Gave it a go on the going out tide was not too bad too start, nice dabs then alot of pin whiting got colder as the night wen't on and bites got few an far between shock leader knot cut the thumb off me all night every cast was pure pain even when the lads suggested baiting up one last time for last cast at around 12.10am I took my chances with what ever bait was left on my hooks.
Anyone any links or advice on shock leader knots?
I have done the same knot for years and finds it catches alot of drifting weeds and since I have switched too multy's the above makes me left handed for a week after a nights session.

I dont use shock leader to be honest but then for Bass Im not blasting out baits either.
I use 25Ib line and could cast out 150 yards relatively easily if I had to. Are you sure you need it..?
Are you blasing 6ox over 200 yards etc..?

I think I tried shock once or twice but I was more paranoid about the knot than anything else so I left it be.
Havnt had any crack-off's either to be honest. maybe I cast like a girl...! :-)

Before I decided to concentrate on holding just one rod I used to use a tripod with two rods and lash one rod out as far as I could.

Have a look at the link below for info on how to tie a leader knot.

Nice one Eoghan.

I see the laws of physics dont apply to you then.

I wish I could cast 150 yards with no shock leader. It would make things a lot easier.

ALWAYS USE SHOCKLEADER FOLKS. iTS JUST DANGEROUS OTHERWISE.
UP THE DEISE!!!!!!!

If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.

Ill second that. It wasnt a line break for me but a knot giving way yesterday when power casting, i sent a 6 oz weight within an inch or two of lumpys bonce. Not the same thing i know but its a bloody good example as to what can happen. Its never ok to power cast without one, 30lb straight through or not. The only time i ever fish without one is scratching with up to 3 oz within the first 20 to 30 yards.

Its a fair point but you could make it without trying to sound like a smart *****

Like I said I have no use for it as I cast no more than 40 yards these days but in my experience I never had a problem with crack offs.
Obviously safety comes etc etc. I was just trying to give my opinion on it.

If you plan to cast a 6oz beyond the 200 yard mark fair enough but I would have thought with the distances required that a stronger main line would possibly mean you could do without a leader.

you couldnt cast your way out of a brown paper bag mate  150 yards with bait is something few anglers can achieve especially bass anglers   and to get 25lb line a 150 yards out, jesus you must be emptying your spool or using a penn senetor, DUNNO LIKE!!

A 4oz bomb with a bait shield and a relatively good pendulum cast will do it. Crab or squid with bait elastic over something like lug obviously.
Depends on your technique. Maybe I am getting carried away with the 150 yards but I wouldnt be far off it I reckon.

I dont think anyone in the country could cast a squid 150 yards with a 4oz and 25lb line and thats with shockleader

When everyone is finished swinging handbags, lets get back to the problem. Regardless of what knot you prefer make sure when you wind in that the knot is positioned to one side of the spool and not where you are placing your thumb.

Not a full squid, wouldnt be streamlined enough, long strips tied on etc etc

Im sure Im not the only angler who can achieve this distance. People can cast twice this distance.
But it can be done. I did say that anything over this would require a heavier lead and shock leader.

Its one of the reasons I have stopped posting my own catch reports any more on the site, always too much agro and smart arses.

It used to be a decent site with good catch reports, advice etc but lately its getting a bit scorpy.

not trying to get involved but just pointing out that very few people in the world can cast over 300 yards and i don't think you would even be able to come remotely close with bait.

i am willing to believe that you could put a streamlined bait and a 4oz about 100 yards without shockleader. woudn't try it myself though.

No thats a fair point. Im man enough to admit that I dont know the exact distance and maybe 150 yards is OTT.

Ive started using tapered shock leader .It reduces the size of the knot and the amount of weed that gathers at the knot.
