West Cork Beach - casting match, 02/01/2009

#1 Post by thescotsman »

People: me, petekd, roadrunner

Duration: 20:30 - 23:00 (for me at least)

Tide: HW 21:00ish

Weather: easterly breeze, cold

Bait: razor, mack, black lug

Rigs: clipdowns and 3 hook flappers

Results: 1 flounder to me, a garden to Danny

Report: Got a call from Pete to go to the old favourite mark to witness a casting grudge match between himself and Danny. After popping over to Pete's to get help getting my reel rebuilt (should have paid more attention taking it apart  ) and listening to the prematch banter we headed out.
I set up to fish while the boys tuned their equipment ready for the off. Pete with his trusty multi and Danny with a FS setup, which I think had caused most of the debate.

With the tide high and the wind from the east they opted to cast along the beach towards the west. As I stood beside them sizing up their casting range I was a bit worried they weren't leaving themselves enough room - not being funny but I reckoned I could have reached the caravans etc at the end of the beach with a half decent effort, I voiced my concerns, but unconcerned they kept on going.

Both let off good casts, Danny almost taking his finger off :) . I waited anxiously by my rods (well not really, but a bit of poetic licence lends is allowed) for the results. The two boys came back up the beach in fits of laughter. Honours were even on the old distance give a take a few yards, Pete managing to reach the rocks at seaward sise at the end of the beach, but Danny had managed to land in beside the caravans embedding his weight in one of their gardens. A few more feet and it would have been medal time from the Top Gear guys for him

Anyway, deciding not to try their luck anymore the called it a draw and joined me in some fishing. Pete leaving early to pick up some reprobate from the airport, Danny leaving about 10 after no bites for either of us. I was determined I wasn't going to blank first day of the year and just as Danny was pulling out of the car park I landed myself a fat flounder. Stayed on for a bit longer to see if I could get the species count up a bit, but to no avail.

What sort of distances were they reaching?
When I was fishing with Danny and Pat just after Christmas I was very impressed with Danny's casting style - and the distances he could reach - shame all the fish were in close

Well done on your first flounder of the year.

Fair play to you Lee for sticking it out with the c**p weather

to be fair the only reason i was there was to kick Pets a** casting

During the pre-match "discusions" it was agreed that he would give me 20mtrs as HE has a proper rod n reel (i think he was taking pitty on me)

Little did he know    both casts were withen feet of each other, distance not to sure as we didnt pace them back but i would say 150-160 mtrs.

I usually cast better but   oops i had forgot to take the right spool for my reel (was using 30lb line and the spool was only half full)

on a serious note it was not a beech i usually fish and had i known that the caravans were as close i wouldnd have casted in there direction. The lead was burried about 4" into frozen earth can you imagen what damage that would have done to a person just proves why it is so important to have a shock leader
