Wexford Bass 3-01-09

#1 Post by Danny M. »

People:Myself . Carpets, Pat Security Man, Century Man and Phillip

Duration:6pm - 130am

Tide: rise and fall

Weather:Beautiful

Bait:Crab and lug.

Rigs:4/0 Pennel pulley ( dont know what the ladswere using.)

Results: Myself 1 Bass Landed, I codling not landed ! 1 Bass not landed!
Carpets 1, 3 Bearded Rockling.
Pat Blank.
The rest of the lads had fish but cant remember who had what so they can fill ya in when they get online.

Report: We had organised to meet up with Security Man and Century Man and do a bit to get out of the house. I hadnt been out since Dec 4th so I was rearing to go. Went dug the lug and scouted out a couple of areas to fish. We decided to go with plan A and try for a few codling.
Conditions were good with a nice swell rolling in we fired out the first baits, Carpets and myself. The lads arrived down a few mins later and I went over for a chat. Mid conversation Pat starting roaring at me, so I went back down to my rod to see Pat with my rod in his hands. 'Lad the the rod nearly came of of the stand' , sound job I said, picked the rod up and got a nod, struck;bang fish on... Was decent enough fish head banging away on the other end, I was easing him in to shore trying to avoid the breakers when Pat tried to free a Kelp stick that was stuck on my leader knot.......SNAP....line broke at the leader knot, fish and trace gone right at the waters edge......'Bleeps' all round !!!!
That was the only excitement from our end with regards to Plan A.Weed became a problem and we decided on Plan B, an area we had scouted out earlier in the day.

Location for Plan B had a lovley surf rolling in with no weed showing which was nice :D . No action for the first hour or two at our end, the lads were picking up a few flounders and rockling I think from the start.
Just before midnight I got a small knock, around 10secs later I got hit hard but I didnt strike, I waited about 3 mins with the rod in hand for the fish to hit it again which it did and I struck, bang fish on ...
It gave a good scrap going right then left along the surf, I eased him in and my first Bass of the year was landed. He tipped the scale bang on 5lb, it had deadly colour on its back, we took a few pictures then released him back into the water.
Carpets caught a 3 Beared Rockling then, lip hooked on a 4/0 Pennel!
About 15 mins later Carpets got hit but the fish didnt hook up. Near 1 am I got hit again and struck, bang fish on... another Bass, it was doing acrobatics through the surf, splashing jumping etc.. I was out standing in the surf with Carpets as I brought him in, but he threw the hook about 6 feet from us, not to worry as he then had the cheek to swim by us ..lol, so we got a good look at his nice big black back on him!

That was really all the excitement from our end, I think Century man had a decent flounder up their end and im not sure what else was caught as the lads left before us.

It was a bad enough session with the amount of bait that was in the water for the duration of the session. Not a great result but its a start for 2009.

Good Report Danny,

Was great to get out with you all and to find out we are just a stones throw away LOL.

Must do it again.

Pity about the amount of weed at the first venue. I managed to salvage a rockling from it and I never thought that I would be glad to catch a rockling but was glad as the fish got to the bait before the weed did (for that one cast anyway LOL).

Philip had a flounder first cast at the second venue then was all quiet for a while. About an hour later on the falling tide I had a good few knocks.Small bass I thought but it turned out to be a good flounder of 41cm.

I think Security Man had 1 or 2 rockling but Im sure he'll add his two cents whenever he gets out of bed..PMSL.

There was an angler from Dublin next to Philip also who I think had some whiting.

Nice report, Danny

You's had a great fire goin there too, badly needed on the night that was in it!!
Meself & Century man are bringin one the next night, with a few skewer sticks - we'll cook the Cod on site!
Twas a good session, good to get out. Had 2 Rockling in total myself, lost one trace to a hard knock on a mackrel flapper (while I was down talking to you's... ).
We were all using fresh Lug an Mackrel - all fish caught on Lug.
Just goes to show that you don't know what to expect at that mark, at any time of the tide!
Pity mark 'A' didn't pan out, it would have fished well without the weed. Lucky I bailed out before loosing any gear!!

Hopefully we can do it again before long.

(And PS Century man, I'm always out of bed before you!!)
