Bray Harbour 01-01-09

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:me and big mick

Duration:6-9.30pm

Tide:low at 8-13pm

Weather:calm,,not too cold at first,, ,cold later

Bait:lug,mack squid

Rigs:3 hook flappers

Results:whiting, 5 bearded rockling, dabs and flounder

Report:just a short session to get things going for 09. We went to Bray Harbour as it was to be sub zero temperatures and we didnt want to travel too far but as it turned out it was quite pleasant, calm and not getting really cold till late in the session. As usual for Bray Harbour there were plenty of crabs present and big mick had more than his fair share, i was luckier being at the end of the pier i didnt get too many. First cast for me produced a double of a 5 bearded rockling and a dab, happy days. Mick also got a 5 bearded rockling but was plagued by crabs for most of the night after this, only managing one more fish, a whiting. I ended up with 3 five bearded rocklings, 3 dabs, a flounder and 13 whiting, all small. A busy few hours , was good to be getting a few fish here as its been a while since ive had any luck here. I was fishing 2 rods for a while and used a bag of frozen fish mix on one rod ,squid, mussel, prawns etc, uncooked. It saved the lug for the other rod and the mix did catch some fish alright. Tried it in wicklow harbour the other night with no success though but i'll give it another go sometime. We left at 9-30pm when we ran out of bait. A better than expected start to my species hunt with 4 species   .

Great start to the New Year - well done.
Tomorrow night will be my first fishing for 2009 - just hope the forecasted change to southewesterly winds is correct. These easterly/southeasterly winds have killed off the fishing on the south coast at the moment.
Cod season Winter 2013/14: 117 cod (best fish: 6.5 lbs)
Cod season Winter 2014/15: 193 cod (best fish: 4.25 lbs)
