Re: leader knot
On the rare occasion that I need a shock leader I use the albright knot http://www.animatedknots.com/albright/index.php...works for me!

Re: leader knot
aha Rory so I'm not the only one who wouldn't be mad on them or feel they are not a necesity, used a leader tonite for first time, got an extra bit of distance ok and really tested the rod, just wasn't bothered tying on another when I snagged. Printed off a few knots just wondering which one is considered the best

Re: leader knot
I stopped using shock leaders during the summer - weed kept catching in the knot - just enough to stop the knot coming through the tip eye. The final straw was when I had a good fish on the line (presumably a good size bass), the leader knot wedged in the eye and the fish got off the hook
Switched to using 30 or 35 lb line. Maybe I could get a few extra yards using a lighter line but I think most of the places I fish there are fish at moderate distance to close in.
What I really should do is have a spare spool with a lighter line and leader for those days when nothing is biting at moderate/close distances.

Re: leader knot
I always reckoned if you have right rod/reel/line combo you could do without leaders. Only time maybe need them is in a big surf where heavier lead required or specifically casting to distance areas i.e gullys, reefs, shoals of fish. Still no harm knowing how or being able to pull out a spare spool pre prepared

This last video clip is the same as the knot I am usin although I cant claim it is the best knot.

Re: leader knot
Ya Seanie...for the type of fishing I do...fixed spool reels with 15-20lb line straight through and flurocarbon for hook lenghts. I usually don't need more than 3oz of lead. Distance isn't required on most spots I fish as the bass are in very close. When I do need to cast any distance, I don't get crackoffs....maybe it's down to my style of casting
The only exception to this is when I'm fishing a mark like de wall in Monkstown where you need the extra weight to hold bottom and a shockleader is must on safety grounds.
I suppose its all down to your style of fishing and what works for you.

Ah now lads ye have to be open minded. One way of doin things wont work all the time. Adaptability is one of the keys to consistency - and this applies for bass too.

No need. He's gonna get run over by the runaway economy anyway in the local/Eu elections.
