South coast - 27th December 2008

#1 Post by RockHunter »

People: Me, Pat, Danny

Duration: Me: 4.5 hours

Tide: HW at 5.30 pm

Weather: Very cold, strong easternly wind

Bait: Me: black lug, razor

Rigs: 3/0 & 4/0 pennel pulleys, 2/0 two hook flapper

Results: Me: 1 bass; Pat: 5 or 6 whiting before I left

Report: I decided to try a beach that I hoped hadn't been netted by the scumbags that have decimated the bass pouplation off several of the East Cork beaches over the last month. There was a bitterly cold, strong easterly wind blowing when I arrived. There wasn't much of a surf as the wind was flattening out the waves. I set up two rods both with pennel pulleys baited with lug/razor, one was cast to moderate distance - and I managed to cast the other about the furthest I have ever reached (helped by the wind). But there was no sign of a bite for a long time.

Pat and Danny arrived about an hour and a half later.

When it was close to high tide I changed tactics - switched one rod to the two hook flapper and cast it in fairly close and the second rod with the 3/0 pennel was cast to moderate distance.

We were hopeful of things picking up after dark. Pat got the first bite - a tiny whiting - which I think he then used for bait.

Shortly after that I noticed that the line on the rod with the pennel had gone slack although I hadn't seen any movement on the rod tip, so I didn't think too much about it until I started to tighten the line and realized that there was a lot of slack line - it could only have been a slackline bite. I quickly retrieved the line until I felt some tension and struck - I could feel a good size fish on the end. It was in fairly close at this stage so it didn't take long before I landed it - it was a 53 cm bass, just over 3.5 lb :D :D :D :D

It went quite after that. There were some gentle tugs on the line but that was most likely small whiting nibbling on the bait. Pat had a few more whiting at that stage.

I was getting cold and hungry so decided to pack up at about 7.30 pm as the tide was starting to drop rapidly and left Pat and Danny to continue - hopefully they managed to get a bass before they left.

Stayed for another hour Frank and managed a few more whiting. No bass though , despite livebaiting with whiting. Danny avoided a dreaded blank, however, and picked up a nice plaice . He also managed a whiting before we left  .
