Waterford - 20th December 2008

#1 Post by RockHunter »

People: Me and Marlinman

Duration: 7.30 pm - 12.30 am

Tide: HW at 11.50 pm

Weather: Strong westerly wind, cold, dry

Bait: Black lug, razor

Rigs: 3/0 pennel pulleys

Results: Me: 1 bass; Marlinman: 2 bass, 1 coalfish

Report: Bit of a delay in posting this report due to work/Christmas etc. We arrived at the Co. Waterford beach and set up about mid-way along the beach. There was a good moderate surf but unfortunately there was a strong cross wind that made bite detection difficult. It was quite for the first couple of hours. Marlinman was the first to catch - he got a fine looking bass, he thought it was about 3 lb - but it looked bigger than that to me - I would have put it at 4 or 4.5 lb (maybe because I wasn't catching anything his just looked bigger :!: :!: ). Unfortunately I didn't get a photo of it. From what I remember I think it was a slackline bite - and had come in very close to the shore before he connected with it.

However, about 30 or 40 minutes later I noticed a small twitch on the tip of one of my rods - I picked it up and waited. I could feel gentle tugs on the line but left the line hang a little slack until I felt a good solid bite and then struck hooking into a fish that was putting up a good struggle. It was a 47 cm bass :D :D :D :D saved from a blank.

Marlinman got a smaller bass later - I think he said it was about 2 lb.
He also got a plump coalfish - we didn't measure it but I would say it was about 35-37 cm.

We also had a few slackliners but failed to connect.

We had hoped for a few more bites close to high tide but it got quite for about the last hour. The bass had moved on. But I was happy enough to get one bass and it was great to go fishing with Marlinman.

Give me a shout if you want to head out - hopefully those east winds will ease off.
