best reel for casting distance

#1 Post by dan »

which will cast further a fixed spool or multiplyer.

at the moment i am on the fixed spool and cant get that far, from a peir i can get about 40 yards, i can manage a bit further on the beech, 60-70 yards, how can i increase my casting distance with a fixed spool or is a multiplier better.

Back in the day the multiplyer ruled the court but fixed spools have pretty much caught up now with all the tech advances..
Use what you comfortable with.

Sorry but the only way is to learn, there is no short cut to distance you just need to put in the practice.

Fixed spool can cast very long distances more than 200 mtrs, but it needs thin lines (0.16 to 0.25), few rings, never more than 7, and more diametre. The first ring in the butt must be far away from the reel and better to be a 40.
Thats all. Last time on the field i cast 168 mtrs/183.7 yards with 0.28 125 grs/4.4 Oz I used a Daiwa Tournament SS 3000 (fixed spool) reel and a Zziplex Profile(it was the first tine i cast with this rod). I do it with OTG. Also the rod must be build for fixed spool ( the spine ). And the most important you must to know how to cast OTG or Pendulum cast.

With thin line bouth reels cast well, but from 0.25 to up is better a multiplyer reel.

Of course with thin lines you must to use a taper leader ( 15mtrs conic line from 0.20 ti 0.60 ) and dont worry about big fish people here in Spain fish 6 Kgrs with 0.16 and 0.14 line...how??? Using the reel drag.
Good luck

i agree with paddy, a really good shimano fixed spool will cast just as well as a multi with lines up to about 15lb. the disadvantage is these fixed spools are very expensive, some of them costing up to £450.

my advice(having been in your position) is to just practise casting with the setup you have got. which fixed spool and rod are you using? a way to cheat is: get the thinnest 15lb line you can buy. i think grauvell do a really thin line. this helps the line peel off the spool easier. this will only help so much however.

i have been there and i thought that getting a multi would improve my distance. it didn't. i then tried to improve my cast and in the last couple of years i have gone from 50-60 yard casts to 140-150 yard casts

try to get in contact with someone from the ulster casting club, they should be able to show you the basics of how to cast properly.

anyway, tell us what gear you are using.

Alex

:edit: i forgot to add, if you spend enough on the right gear you can improve you distance, but only to a point. and you will have to spend alot using that method of "improvement"

I used to cast (tournament ) with multi but only ever managed 195m .35 line and 150grm

I then switched to F/S

I have used an old S/H Penn (£25) for casting .35 /150g and have cast just as far with none of the problems associated with multi's. I used this same reel to cast 113m with .25 line and 18grm plug.

One of the most important things for F/S casting on the beach is to make sure your reel is filled up to the lip ( but not overfilled) The rod should be rung for the use of F/S reels. The rings should be of the large stand off variety.
Under normal circumstances an easy lob should see you past 100 mts.

When you say you are only getting 40/70 yds it would sound like your spool is half empty.

it sounds more like a style problem than a reel problem i see anglers during the summer with good gear and they cant cast 50 yards a multi wont add anything but weight to your tackle box after the first birdsnest ,ask a pro for a few lessons you will be enlightened a casting dvd could also help or just google casting their is some realy good advice out their for free,i,m fishing years and am only an average caster but still get a fish or two

cheers everyone, what main lines and shock leaders and leads would yas use, i supose the leads depend on the rod and line.

At Last someone with proper knowledge say's the truth    8) 8) 8)

Deasent fixed spools are far easier to use and more "fisherman friendly" than the "tackle tarts" multipliers

Can you give some examples of reels you would class as "decent" fixed spools?

Any of the big shimanos or Gravull (spelling) i use a Gravull Zuse for my long rang stuff and can get a fair distance. i also have a small Baitrunner 4000 size on a spinning rod and can get 120-130yrds with a 2oz lead so you don't necessarily need a big reel.

The best advice i can give you is to get some lessons from a pro or experienced angler and stick with the fixed spool

mite get a multiplyer before the summer and try it on the beech and try the fixed spool on another rod to see which i do best with.

For fishing is better a tapered line ( is a conic 15 mtrs line starting from 0.18 diametre to 0.60 more or less ) the blood knot is very small.
