A River Runs through it for me......really like that one. Never liked JAWS and it's an aweful pity that movie was ever made. Sharks have not had a good time since.

River runs through it started me on fly fishing. Terrible confession.

One of the bond movies where they are fishing for marlin.

The old man and the sea was fairly savage "I love you fish, but before this day is out i'm going to kill you"

Worst movie in the world "A Perfect storm". Where George clooney does a big rant about going outside the harbour etc. Then the cheesey line "You're a god damn sailfish fisherman"

A river runs through it for me too.... I cannot watch this film but it takes me back to chasing small brownies and salmon on the Crana river in Donegal with my 30 year old split cane 9 foot fly rod and collection of about 3 flies, a Teal Blue and Silver, an Alexandra and a shrimp pattern for salmon. Hard to explain the delights of wading into a small overgrown river with no waders on (times were tough back then!) up to your nads, soaking wet, poking out trout and salmon from tiny lies. Used to steam the trout to keep you going then over a small fire, swathed in damp grass and covered in earth and stuffed with sorrel leaves. Lived on that river for the best part of 10 years until women, drinking, work and a move to Dublin put paid to all that. Those really were the days.....

Reel People: Fishermen of Plum Island

Not a Hollywood style movie, filmed as documentary, you can find it here: www.reelpeoplefish.com

It s made by a veteran reel-timer. Its about fishing on Plum island and why people fish. It does not matter where you fish you will identify with this movie explaining why people fish. There is some vintage fish footage of the old days where some older women catches the fish of a life time on a live mackerel and it appears to be a non event for her. Great footage and some great characters too.

A Passion For Angling by Chris Yates and Hugh Miles.
Nothing else caught the atmosphere of angling so well.

And I hope the new one from Hugh Miles and Martin Bowler will be as good:

A River Runs Through it was brilliant.

my favourite fishing movie has to be free willy, but what most people wont realise is that i played a small but significant part in the movie. Go to the end scene where willy is about to jump to freedom, if you look very closely just at the end of the breakwater, i am baiting up a size 19/0 hook in anticipation of landing that floppy finned monster, willys going nowhere
Y'all know me. Know how I earn a livin'. I'll catch this bird for you, but it ain't gonna be easy. Bad fish. Not like going down the pond chasin' bluegills and tommycods. This shark, swallow you whole. Little shakin', little tenderizin', an' down you go. And we gotta do it quick, that'll bring back your tourists, put all your businesses on a payin' basis. But it's not gonna be pleasant. I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks, chief. I'll find him for three, but I'll catch him, and kill him, for ten. But you've gotta make up your minds. If you want to stay alive, then ante up. If you want to play it cheap, be on welfare the whole winter. I don't want no volunteers, I don't want no mates, there's just too many captains on this island. Ten thousand dollars for me by myself. For that you get the head, the tail, the whole damn thing.

2010- Sea Trout, Codling, Pollock, Coalie, Whiting, Flounder, Doggies, Plaice, Dab.

i agree with norm. the athmosphere in "A Passion For Angling" was amazing. i havnt seen a fishing programme which comes close to it. i also really liked the presenters.for them it was the simple pleasure of fishing which they empahsized, not the mine field of the most modern tackle, biggest fish most matches won etc..
shore species 2008(25):dogfish(3.1lbs), bull huss (12lb 2oz), bass, shore rockling, coalie, whiting, pollack, conger (22.4lbs),flounder, thick lipped mullet (4.8lbs),turbot,ling (11.2lbs),ballan wrasse(4.5lbs), cuckoo wrasse, pouting, poor cod, cod (9.5lbs), dab, 3 bearded rockling, long spined scorpion fish, corkwing wrasse, plaice, trigger fish, sea trout, garfish

Absolutely, "A Passion For Angling" is superb and much like Chris Yates writing, it really captures the true essence of what fishing is all about, not the latest must have gadgets. I think that and the way in which it was shot give it a kind of timeless feel, its hard to believe that its fifteen years since it was first aired.
