SAI SAC Last Man Standing 08 sponsored by Veals/Daiwa FINAL
People:the competitors consisted of the ivory fella, paba b, boycicle and mark sinnot
the spectators included myself and manorgy
Duration:11-5
Tide:floodinin
Weather: various, consisted of no wind and sun to snow, hail, sleet, rain and wind
Bait:mainly lug, mackerel, sandeel, maddies and rag
Rigs: clip downs and fliers for the most part
Results: 2 flounders and 4 dogs
Report:suppose preparation and the festivities began yesterday when myself and boycie went out digging to supply lug for the event. sure enough he put my skills to shame getting about 250 lug, when meanwhile i coughed up about 50 odd and gave up cause i was tired and cold, no sooner had i developed an appetite for digging again, and was getting into a new trench had the tide decided to creep up on us. kind of funny, as boycie suddenly proclaimed we had to leave, and when i asked why he just pointed to me only to reveal the sea behind us, which only half an hour ago was half a mile away!!
so, left the house this morning with mark sinnot and boycie at about half five after tuckin into a bit of shredded wheat and some DR.phil. we made our to the deepest darkest parts of Connemara after leaving the refuge of moycullen, with only some sambos and crisps to show for it. the drive down was quite nice it must be said, there was snow capped mountains all over the shop, with a bit of sleet making an appearance too. we arrived at the beach about 10 or so, made sure the gear was set and took a look at the beautiful horseshoe bay of galssilaun, with the two boys discussing tactics, as time went by the wind eased off and the sun came out making it look ideal for diamonds. it seemed that distance would be critical with maybe a few flats patroling alon the breaker. sure enough everyone arrived and at about 11 30 the draws for the pegs where made with dennis taking peg 1, boycie on peg 2, seanie on peg 3 and mark on peg 4.
myself and the penicia aka le cockledoodledo headed to the far end of the beach and set up our own camp, sure enough we got the ball rolling, by casting out first. out went a two hook loop with sandeel/mack cocktails as far as i could put it and paul put a slider with sandeel well out too. the lads got the comp underway soon after and as usual SAI weather fair goes the wind kicked up again and with it began a hailstorm of biblical proportions. the two of us headed back up to the lads helped put up beach buddies and umbrellas up. soon enough sean took the lead by nabbing a flounder at distance on sandeel, but this was to be the end of the action for some time. the winter Olympics began in place of the fishing, with snowball fights dog petting/feeding competitions with the local Labrador and just basic survival as the key games.
a few casts later me and paul packed it in and decided warmth was a better a better option, we stumbled past the lads on our way back to the car with hastily packed gear only to find the weather had settled again by the time we reached the car. a decision was made after a quick scouting mission to fish the fjord of little killary in place of the beach for us two while the other 4 loopers battled on. the fjord proved to be a winner offering shelter and a few fish. we manged 4 casts each with 4 dogs to show for our efforts and a least a missed bite on each other cast. finished up and headed to the car park to see the results only to find the sean had snuffled another flounder at distance, some man it must be said or just crazy!? the others unfortunately, blanked, and given the conditions, in my opinion was a good result. the following places where decided by a draw with the following positions of the last man standing
1st sean ivory
2nd andrew boycie
3rd mark sinnot
4th dennis brock
