The Brother took us for dinner to teh restaurant here the other night. Very nice in fairness. We had pigeon (for the laugh) for starters and the brother was pulling no.4 shot out but it was game meet so ya know that was grand.
anyway for main course I saw bass on menu. so I asks the waiter was the Bass Irish (Like hinting I wouldn't eat it otherwise.) and he said it was east cork caught sea bass. Now I couldn't remember off the top of my head the legalities of things so I ordered to see if it was actually irish. To be honest I taught it was the greak stuff and if it was Irish it would have only been about 30 - 35 cm live.

so whats the story on this crack?
Is it legal to sell Irish bass?
could it have been irish farmed?
Is it a good thing that Restaurants are marketing bass as Irish when it may not have been?
How dose one complain?
And anyone have any good recipies for pigeon.

Lastly, any chance we could put out a dioxin scare bout fish........? kinda serious like

No

hughcronin wrote:could it have been irish farmed?

I've never heard of any Irish bass farms.

No. It creates a demand where there shouldn't be one. Where there's a demand, someone will come up with the supply.

How dose one complain?

Telephone or email the regional fisheries board. Contact details for all the FBs are here:

No. Watch out for the shotgun pellets.

Radioactive sounds better and lasts longer.

you wouldent go far wrong with roast pigeon breast sandwiches and a flask of hot peppery oxo on nights like this on the beach

ps. you have to cut the roasted breasts accross the grain to make little medallions very nice reheated fried in a little olive oil and dont forget a little black pepper:wink:

well said teacher,
maybe Hugh you should try pigeon as bait to catch a real irish bass and invite
people home for a real meal :)!
i do agree all the retail bass are tiny! but not young!! i can see this retail availability
ending soon due to over fishing/availability of small bass.
losers? bass and anglers!
species 2009, whiting :(, three beard rockling,.shore rockling, 5 beard rockling, flounder, lesser spotted dogfish,bullhuss, dab,bass(13), more whiting : pollock,poorcod,pouting, sea trout(the dodder!)brown trout,sea scorpion,mackerel, silver eel,

All those small Bass you see in the shops are farmed in the Med, usually Greece. That's ok.

The problem is with wild Irish Bass being sold illegally in eateries & shops.
