wexford estuary monday 08/12/08
People: Me and Paul Bracken
Duration: 1pm-6pm
Tide:High at 1pm
Weather:Very nice, calm, cold
Bait: Fresh Peeler
Rigs:3 hook flappers
Results: Me 1 Flounder
Paul 4 Flounder
Report:
Decided on a flounder session for monday in wexford, arrived at high tide and fished the dropping tide. fresh peeler for bait.
No action for about two hours then we started getting bites.
I got the first flounder a lovely specimen 45cm weighed him on a scales i had and he was bang on 2.5lbs lovely fish and a great scrap.
Paul got one shortly afterwards and then followed with a double and finished off with another nice one at the end, all good sized fish.
We were casting as far as we could with the light flounder gear maybe 50-80 yds
All fish seemed to be out far nothing doing in close.
Took a chance on the venue and it payed off very enjoyable handy session.
Put some pics up this time.

Lads, theres a fishing ban in this area from 1st Dec to 28/29 Feb inclusive. There were signs in place about this untl recently might even be still around but have'nt been down there in a while. The ban was introduced as there are a lot of flounder about that are full of spawn hence the weight. It would be nice if members of SAI club would comply with this ban.

Re: wexford estuary monday 08/12/08
If its true,
i dont know what worse, councils trying to ban anglers from certain beaches and charge fee's or an angling club unlawfully notifying the public falsely of a restricted area of an estuary for a period of time, just to protect their own interests, not the species. If the species was a concern they would make a case nationwide
that estuary is not a popular venue, therefore the amount of anglers that would fish it is minimal in comparison to other venues in wexford,
how much damage is an angler actually going to do?
Not every fish that is caught would be taken home, in general the majority of anglers would be aware that the flounder is breeding,
just my 2 cents worth

I heard of this ban but I always thought it only applied to fishing clubs holding competitions there during these months i.e. a ban on a large amount of anglers fishing flounder at the same time. I didn't think it applied to a couple of lads fishing there for a couple of hours, I can't see the harm in that. I've been fishing there for the past few years and i haven't seen any signs mentioning a ban.

Re: wexford estuary monday 08/12/08
Hi,
Regarding Flounder fishing in the south Wexford estuaries.
There is no bye law relating to Flounder fishing in Co. Wexford. A gentlemans agreement exists which kicks in on the 1st of January and ends on the 28/29th of February. This was set up to protect the Flounder during their vital spawning period. Pressure on the stocks due to club competitions being held at this time gave rise to this.
Flounder numbers and size in these estuaries are not what they were but are improving. Responsible angling coupled with catch and release where possible will continue to improve the situation.
Check out the Eastern Regional Fisheries Board site, www.fishingireland.net , for information on Bye Laws relating to angling plus the December updates section.

Feck me that really makes me want to hit the flounders, I know a great spot but due to the tide run I can't fish it correctly. You can chase them in the shallows at low water.
Any thoughts......
