Rusheen Bay, Galway 10.12.08

#1 Post by saltydog »

People: stevecrow74, myself & fishinmidget (for the last few casts)

Duration:14:30-17:00

Tide: HT @ 15:00

Weather: little wind nice bright day

Bait: Bread

Rigs: Mullet rigs

Results: Mullet

Report: Bouyed up by fishinmidgets recent success with the mullet decided it was time to give them a lash having not fished for mullet for many years. Calls were made and steve and myself hit the mark and were joined for the last few casts by fishinmidget. We walked along the foreshore and it didn't take long to spot the mullet breaking the surface, we scattered some bread to drift across to the mullet on the tide as we made our way around the bay to were they were showing. After a short while of bread being sucked off hooks floats being nudged steve got one right behind his bread which duly disappeared float twitched then strike fish on gave a great account of himself with some nice darting runs. It was great to see and got me thinking "why haven't i been mullet fishing in so long"?? Got a pic then the fish was released to join his numerous companions. I got a take soon after had the fish on for a minute big side splash looked decent then disaster slipped the hook.... was praying that wasn't my only chance. We stuck at it had missed takes floats nudged the normal mullet frustrations then bingo me not wearing contacts and after leaving the polaroids in the car didn't see the mullet at my bread steve did and just as he said strike i saw the float twitch fish on and he felt decent gave a great fight took line a few times got him to the bank and landed. We were made up target species accuired, we left the scales in the car but steve estimated his to be around the 2lb mark with mine around the 4lb mark. Alex came down as the tide was dropping and light was going had a few casts but we were pretty much fishing blind at that stage. Will try again soon for more might just have got bitten by this mullet bug now

they are too concerned about anything touching there limestone walls to care about fishing... had a complaint about me resting my rod against the wall while packing up... posh or what!!!!

any time they got spooked, about 30 would splash... maybe more.. definitely not ones or two's

its not really about air temp, more about the water temp. im not 100% but i think the water down here would be warmer because of the gulf stream warming the west coast up.

but as steve said, it has been freezing here lately.

Nice fish Conor! Better than Steve's tiddler anyway... :D
Its called fishing, not catching. If it was called catching it wouldn't be fishing!

i was just checking the sea temp for around ireland and the strange thing is that the west coast of ireland is colder than the irish sea
here`s the data collected by all the bouys around ireland
M2 bouy(irish sea) 11.2 degrees
M3 bouy(sth west cork) 10.5
M4 bouy(nth west donegal) 10.7
M5 bouy(sth east) 10.4
M6 bouy(300-400 miles off galway coast) 12.0

so after reading the data why the feck have the mullet vanished from strangford lough etc :?:
any ideas anyone :?:
