for mullet - bread fly (aka carpet fly) which looks like floating bread, maggot fly, and small dry flies
for mackerel - most any fly - eg. deceivers would be fine
for wrasse - tricky one that - would go with the prawn fly - looks like a prawn, or maybe a crab imitation
for cod - not sure how you would present it to em? - they would go for a white fly if you could satisfy the first requirement

i tried salt water fly fishing once on portaferry. got some whiting, pollack, a coalie, dropped a tiny little red cod and had a nice wrasse follow it in, well about 1Ib. i used a catswhisker and sank it with 3 ssg split shots.

saltwater fly fishin is good fun. However, i think it is a specialist area. Wot I mean is to be really good at it you have to specialise in it. Jim Hendricks is a prime example of this.

Ok, I can't really comment on the Mullet. I have caught a small one on a size 18 fly. But I haven't seen any this year to really test that out.

Mackeral don't really take deceivers. Too big.

Pollock, Cod, Coalies, whitting etc. will all take deceivers. Problem is getting the depth and distance to take them. Cod are readily take on feathers, so there is no reason they won't take a fly.


Wrasse:- We'll I can testify that they don't take crab flies. Or anything else for that matter. Any wrasse I have taken on the fly we're in thick, thick floating weed. I took them on a size 14 orange and gold fly. I tried them with this again this year. No success, but they we're there.

If you fish a size 14 shrimp fly. You never know what you are going to catch. It will take a load of small fish, but it doesn't deter this bigs ones.

i have a small small red cod on portaferry on a homemade fly (my own invention) on a size 4 hook. would post a pic if i could find it.

Pollock , whitting and something that I haven't landed yet.

3 times it's happened now on seperate marks. What ever it is, it's relentless and my line breaks within 10 seconds (12lb leader).

I have manage to land a 14lb salmon on a 10lb leader. So Whatever it is, it's BIG.

Anthony, could your mystery fish have been a tope, there are plenty of them in the Swilly, or there used to be, had a friend who used to go up there to fish for them? Just a thought, as I can't see a big bass or monster sea trout breaking your leader.

I can rule out a sea-trout and they would do some acrobatics.
I've never heard of a bass in that are so I don't really know about that. Wasn't a conger, to hard of a fight. I could well believe it was a tope, but I have never heard of them taking a non-scented fly. Although, will all the fish I caught those days the fly could have been well scented.

It's happened me 3 times now. Twice in Killybegs and once on charter boat beside St. Johns Point.

I can honestly say this thing fought very much like a wrasse, but very few (if any)wrasse are capable of breaking a leader like that.

Never had any problems in area. Didn't go to ground,

Just went straight down. Couldn't get the line out fast enough, then I dropped the rod down low so as not to break tippet.

That's when it snapped line.

Learned my lesson and had disc drag loose next time. Same thing happened. My guess is whatever it is, it has teeth.

i bought some rio toothy critter leaders on ebay..they have a trace at the top....
worth a go for the monster of the deep??

A wire biter for pike would/should work also - I have a few lying around, remind me nearer the date and I'll give you a couple if you make it to the Mulroy yak meet.
